Day was born and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, [2] in a house containing 20 dogs, five rats, three cats, two birds and a ferret. [3] From the age of 13, Day knew she wanted to live in Japan and would later study there as an exchange student. [3]
After being fired on her first day from a teaching job in central Japan, Day moved to Tokyo and took up comedy after seeing an advert in an English language magazine. [3]
Day learned her craft in the Japanese comedy scene, headlining at the Tokyo Comedy Store from 2002. [4] In 2004 she opened for Japanese comedian Zenjiro at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. [4] She has gone on to gig around the world, including clubs in London, Manchester, Dublin, Los Angeles, New York and Paris. [5]
Beginning in 2010, she has written, directed and performed five solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe. [5]
She has appeared in the 2014 book The Humour Code and the 2017 book Joker Face alongside Jimmy Carr, Sara Pascoe, Russell Howard and Katherine Ryan. [5] She was also featured in the 2008 documentary The Tokyo Comedy Store. [4]
In 2020, Day performed alongside fellow Americans Hopwood Depree and Will Franken in a Yank in the UK stand-up gig at the Leicester Comedy Festival. [2] She had intended to take her show Spring Day: Dark Comedy for Nice People to the 2020 Edinburgh Fringe until its cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2] [6]

In February 2023, Day appeared in episode 7 of series 17 of Live at the Apollo (TV series) on BBC One.

James Anthony Patrick Carr is a British-Irish comedian, presenter, writer, and actor. He is known for his rapid-fire deadpan delivery of one-liners which have been known to offend some people. He began his comedy career in 1997, and he has regularly appeared on television as the host of Channel 4 panel shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year.
Francesca Martinez is an English comedian, writer and actress. She has cerebral palsy, but prefers to describe herself as "wobbly". Martinez first came to public attention in 1994, when she made her debut on the television series Grange Hill, where she went on to portray the role of Rachel Burns for a total of 55 episodes. Later turning her focus to stand-up comedy, she has performed at the Edinburgh Festival and internationally, including the Melbourne Comedy Festival, the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Perth Festival and the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. In 2018 she completed a 140-date tour, and has had off-West End London runs at the Tricycle Theatre, the Hackney Empire, and the Soho Theatre. Martinez's debut play, All of Us, was scheduled to be performed at the National Theatre in 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It opened in July 2022.
