The Spring Quarry Limestone is a geologic formation in Wales. It preserves fossils dating back to the Carboniferous period.
Megalonychidae is a group of sloths including the extinct Megalonyx. Megalonychids first appeared in the early Oligocene, about 35 million years (Ma) ago, in southern Argentina (Patagonia). There is actually one possible find dating to the Eocene, about 40 Ma ago, on Seymour Island in Antarctica. They first reached North America by island-hopping across the Central American Seaway, about 9 million years ago, prior to formation of the Isthmus of Panama about 2.7 million years ago. Some megalonychid lineages increased in size as time passed. The first species of these were small and may have been partly tree-dwelling, whereas the Pliocene species were already approximately half the size of the huge Late Pleistocene Megalonyx jeffersonii from the last ice age.
Pantolambda is an extinct genus of Paleocene pantodont mammal. Pantolambda lived during the middle Paleocene, and has been found both in Asia and North America.
Nalacetus is an extinct pakicetid early whale, fossils of which have been found in Lutetian red beds in Punjab, Pakistan. Nalacetus lived in a fresh water environment, was amphibious, and carnivorous. It was considered monophyletic by Cooper, Thewissen & Hussain 2009. It was said to be wolf-sized and one of the earliest forms of the order Cetacea.
Pseudotribos is an extinct genus of mammal that lived in Northern China during the Middle Jurassic some 165 million years ago, possibly more closely related to monotremes than to theria, although other studies indicate that these shuotheres are closer to therians than to monotremes. The only known specimen was found in the Daohugou Bed in Inner Mongolia.
Cornwallius is an extinct herbivorous marine mammal of the family Desmostylidae. Cornwallius lived along the North American Pacific Coast from the Early Oligocene (Chattian) through the Oligocene and existing for approximately 7.8 million years.
Notochampsa is an extinct genus of protosuchian crocodylomorph. Fossils have been found from the lower Clarens Formation of the Karoo Supergroup in South Africa, dating back to the Pliensbachian stage of the Early Jurassic. Notochampsa comes from a period of relative fossil scarcity, and is the youngest known occurrence of a crocodylomorph from the Karoo Basin of South Africa.
Lystrosauridae is a family of dicynodont therapsids from the Permian and Triassic time periods. It includes two genera, Lystrosaurus and Kwazulusaurus. Kwazulusaurus includes a single species, K. shakai, from the Late Permian of South Africa and Lystrosaurus includes many species from the Late Permian and Early Triassic of South Africa, India, and Antarctica.
Albertogaudrya is an extinct genus of astrapotherian mammal that lived in present-day Salta, Argentina during the Eocene 48.6 to 37.2 million years ago. Fossils of Albertogaudrya have been found in the Lumbrera and Sarmiento Formations. It is named after French palaeontologist Albert Gaudry.
Pappocetus is an extinct protocetid cetacean known from the Eocene of Nigeria and Togo.
The Kinzers Formation is a geologic formation in Pennsylvania. It preserves fossils dating back to the Cambrian Period.
The Batesville Sandstone is a geologic formation in northern Arkansas that dates to the Chesterian Series of the late Mississippian. The base of the Batesville Sandstone, named the Hindsville Limestone Member, unconformably lies on the Moorefield Formation.
The Ash Hollow Formation of the Ogallala Group is a geological formation found in Nebraska and South Dakota. It preserves fossils dating back to the Neogene period. It was named after Ash Hollow, Nebraska and can be seen in Ash Hollow State Historical Park.
The Hogshooter Formation is a geologic formation in Oklahoma. It preserves fossils dating back to the Carboniferous period.
The Newcastle Sandstone is a geologic formation in Wyoming, United States. It preserves fossils dating back to the Late Cretaceous period.
The Alamosa Formation is a geologic formation in Colorado. It preserves fossils. The formation was deposited by Lake Alamosa, a paleolake that existed from the Pliocene to the middle Pleistocene.
The Llanfallteg Formation is a geologic formation in Wales. It preserves fossils dating back to the Ordovician period. It predominantly consists of ash containing siltstones, as wells as ash fall deposits and tuffs. It likely dates to the Darriwilian based on graptolites. The local graptolite fauna includes Didymograptus artus and Glossograptus armatus. The local trilobite fauna includes agnostids, phacopids and asaphids.
The Stockdale Shales is a geologic formation in England. It preserves fossils dating back to the Silurian period.
The Senni Beds is the former name of the Senni Formation in Wales. It preserves fossils dating back to the Devonian period.
The Hells Mouth Grits, formally defined and renamed the Hells Mouth Formation by Young et al., is a geological formation composed of Cambrian Greywackes in the south west part of St. Tudwal's Peninsula. Equivalent to the Rhinog Formation in the Harlech Dome, the grit beds exposed at St Tudwal's are very uniform in lithology and thickness when traced along the outcrops, with a gradual thinning southwards. They exhibit the characteristic textures and structures of greywackes but differ from the normal type in being relatively well sorted and commonly laminated. Intercalated mudstones are more variable both in thickness and in lithology and contain laminated mudstones rich in sponge remains. The sandstones have sharply defined bases, often bearing sole structures and occasionly loaded. Sandstone dykes cut down from the bases of some beds and extend through up to 0.6 m of underlying siltstones. The sandstones may form sheets up to 4 m thick, although a bed thickness of up to 1m is more usual, and have been interpreted as turbidites deposited by currents from the northeast.
