The school opened in 1957 after the consolidation of French Lick and West Baden High Schools. [2]

Athletics and extracurriculars

Springs Valley Junior-Senior High School's athletic teams are nicknamed the "Blackhawks". In the Blackhawks' first season of 1957-58 in basketball, they advanced to the final four of the Indiana state tournament losing to the eventual state champion, Fort Wayne South Side, 55-42.

Blackhawk Brigade

The Junior High/High School band the "Blackhawk Brigade" was directed by Gilbert Aylsworth. His son John Aylsworth took over as director upon the Senior Aylsworth's retirement. After the 1994 season, John retired and during the next seven years, the band had three different directors. In 2001, Luke Aylsworth, John's son, took over as director for the band. The Blackhawk Brigade won the Class C state championship in 1977, the class D state championship in 2010, 2016, and 2017. The Brigade was State Champion Runner-Up in 1978, 1992, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2016 they had their first undefeated season in the history of the program. They have been to the state finals more than twenty times. The Brigade moved to Class D in 1981.

Martin Ray Simmons is an American basketball coach and former player. He is the head men's basketball coach at Eastern Illinois University, a position he has held since 2021. Simmons served as the head men's basketball coach at Wartburg College from 1996 to 1997, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from 2002 to 2007, and the University of Evansville from 2007 to 2018. As a high school player, Simmons was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 1983. He played college basketball at Indiana University Bloomington and Evansville.

The Indiana State Sycamores are the NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic teams of Indiana State University. Since the 1977–78 academic year, Indiana State has been a member of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). The Indiana State football team has competed in Division I FCS since the 1982 season, and has been a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) since it was spun off from the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference (Gateway) when the latter league merged into the MVC in 1992. Past conference memberships include the Indiana College Athletic League (1895–1922), the Indiana Intercollegiate Conference (1922–1950), the Indiana Collegiate Conference (1950–1968) and the Midwestern Conference (1970–1972). The women's teams were Gateway members from the league's 1982 founding until its absorption by the MVC. Melvyn J. Garland was an American basketball coach and player. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he emerged as a star dual-sport athlete in basketball and baseball at Arsenal Technical High School. Garland attended Purdue University and played for the Boilermakers on the basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of all-conference teams in both sports but excelled at basketball, where he was an Honorable Mention All-American during his junior season.

Eddie Bird is an American former basketball player who played college basketball at Indiana State University from 1987 to 1991. He is the younger brother of NBA legend Larry Bird.
