The St. Annes Open [1] also known as the St. Annes on Sea Open was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as in 1932. It was played at the St. Anne's Lawn Tennis Club, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England until the tournament ended in 1974.

History

The St. Annes Open lawn tennis tournament was founded in 1932 and played at the St. Anne's Lawn Tennis Club, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. The women competed for the 'St Annes Trophy'. [2] In 1971 the tournament was incorporated into the Bio-Strath Circuit under the sponsorship name of the Bio-Strath St. Annes Open or simply the Bio-Strath St. Annes, [3] where it was the seventh leg of circuit that year. The tournament ran until 1974 as part of the ILTF tennis circuit then was discontinued.

Former winners of the men's singles title included; Nigel Sharpe (1934), Bob Kirby (1935), John Olliff (1937), Ignacy Tloczyński (1952), Roger Becker (1957), Rudy Hernando (1966), Premjit Lall (1967), and Carlos Kirmayr (1972). Previous winners of the women's singles title has included; Elsie Goldsack Pittman (1935), Rita Bentley (1953), [4] Angela Mortimer (1957), Glenda Swan (1965), Faye Urban (1968), Maria Guzman (1971) and Mandy Morgan (1972).

Venue

St. Annes Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1925. It staged its first open tournament in 1932. The club still exists today and, currently has nine tennis courts. six are hard courts, three of which are floodlit, and three are all-weather AstroTurf courts which are also floodlit. [5]

The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1889 the event had by this time become a regional level tournament that ran until 1983 when it lost its status as a senior international tour level event. However the championships are still being staged today as the East of England and an LTA British Tour.

The London Hard Court Championships and later known as the Bio-Strath London Hard Court Championships for sponsorship reasons was a clay court tennis event founded in 1919. It was held at the Hurlingham Club Ranelagh Gardens, Fulham, London, England through until 1971, when it failed find new sponsors for the following season, and the tournament ended.

The Ilkley Open was a grass court tennis event founded in May 1885 as the Ilkley Tournament. It was held at the Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club (f.1880), Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England through until 1981, when the it failed to find any new sponsors the tournament ended.

The Norfolk Championships also known as the Norfolk County Lawn Tennis Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tournament originally founded in 1906. It was held in multiple locations such as Norwich, Great Yarmouth, and Cromer, England until 1971.

The Tally-Ho! Open Tennis Championships also known as the Tally-Ho! Hard Courts, was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament originally founded in 1923. The tournament was held at the Tally Ho Lawn Tennis Club, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England until 1982.

The Wolverhampton Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1897 as the Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis Tournament. The first tournament was staged at Parkdale, Wolverhampton from 1897 to 1900 before it was discontinued in 1900. The tournament ran as part of the worldwide circuit until 1981 when it was branded as the Mobil 1 Tournament for sponsorship reasons.

The Sheffield and Hallamshire Championships was an open men's and women's international grass court tennis tournament founded in 1888 as the Sheffield and Hallamshire Tournament. The tournament was played at the Sheffield and Hallamshire Lawn Tennis Club (f.1885), Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England until 1976 when it was discontinued.

The Bio-Strath Circuit was a series tour of British tennis tournaments sponsored by the Swiss company Bio-Strath AG, a producer natural food supplements for sports people from 1970 to 1971. The circuit usually began in mid spring in April and ended in late summer in early August.

The West Warwickshire Open also known as the Hill Samuel Life Assurance West Warwickshire Open for sponsorship reasons. It founded as in 1970 and was staged at the West Warwickshire Sports Club (f.1888), Solihull, Midlands, England. The tournament ran until 1981 when it was discontinued.

The Stourbridge Open also known as the Trophee Pernod Stourbridge for sponsorship reasons, was a mens and womens grass court tennis tournament founded in September 1887 as the Stourbridge Lawn Tennis Tournament, and first staged at the Stourbridge Cricket Club (f.1888) grounds, Stourbridge in what was then Worcestershire, but is now part of the West Midlands, England. This tournament has not had a continual history, being established then discontinued on four occasions. The last tournament took place in 1981.

The Droitwich Open also known as the Droitwich Spa Open was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1928 as the Droitwich Open Lawn Tennis Tournament or Droitwich Spa Open Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. The tournament was organised by the Droitwich Spa Lawn Tennis Club, and played at the Brine Baths Park, Droitwich Spa, Worcesteshire, England. The tournament ran until 1939 just before World War II then was discontinued.

The Cumberland Hard Court Championships or Cumberland Club Hard Court Championships and also known as the Cumberland Hard Court Tournament was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded as in 1927. It was played at the Cumberland Club, Hampstead, London, England until tournament ended in 1985.

The Durham and Cleveland Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as in 1900 as the Durham County Association Tournament In 1903 that event became the Durham County Lawn Tennis Championships. It was first played at the Ashbrooke Sports Club Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England until the tournament ended in 1982.

The Kingston International Championships also known as the Kingston International Invitation and the St. Andrew International Invitation was a men's and women's clay court then later hard court tennis tournament established in 1932 as the Kingston International Tournament and first played at St. Andrews Club, then later Sabina Park, then at the Liguanea Club, Kingston, St. Andrews Parish, Jamaica until 1970.
