St Michael's Church is the parish church of Barton-le-Street, a village in North Yorkshire, in England.
A church in Barton-le-Street was mentioned in the Domesday Book. A successor was built in Barton-le-Street in or around the 1160s, which the Victoria County History states "seems to have been a remarkably rich example... the sculptured stones preserved in the present building being of a very unusual character". In 1871, the church was completely rebuilt, in the Norman style, to designs by Perkin and Son. The current church occupies the same footprint as the medieval one, and incorporates almost all the sculpture from that structure. Historic England state that "this sculpture is without close known parallels in England", instead being similar to examples in Western France, such as the Church of Notre-Dame la Grande, Poitiers. It has been Grade I listed since 1954. [1] [2] [3]
The church is built of limestone, with a slate roof. It consists of a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with a combined vestry and organ chamber to the south. There is a north porch, and a bellcote at the west end. The windows are round-headed, and the walls are supported by buttresses. The capitals of the buttresses are connected by corbel tables with about 100 carvings in the 12th century style, made for the Victorian rebuilding, by Charles Mawer. The north doorway is believed to have been the south door of the medieval church, and it is surrounded by a mixture of 12th century and Victorian carvings. Inside, most of the carving is medieval, with scenes including the Adoration of the Magi and the Labours of the Months, much showing Anglo-Scandinavian influence. [2] [3]
Inside the church is a medieval piscina on a Norman base. The altar rails and pulpit are wooden and neo-Gothic, designed by William Matthews. There is a stone and alabaster font in similar style, and Gothic wall panelling, along with a later Gothic organ case, designed by Temple Moore. The floor tiles were designed by William Godwin. The stained glass windows are in a mixture of styles, that in the north and south of the chancel is by Barnett & Son, while the east windows are by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. In the nave, there is a triptych which serves as a World War I memorial. [3]
Romanesque architecture is an architectural style of medieval Europe that was predominant in the 11th and 12th centuries. The style eventually developed into the Gothic style with the shape of the arches providing a simple distinction: the Romanesque is characterized by semicircular arches, while the Gothic is marked by the pointed arches. The Romanesque emerged nearly simultaneously in multiple countries ; its examples can be found across the continent, making it the first pan-European architectural style since Imperial Roman architecture. Similarly to Gothic, the name of the style was transferred onto the contemporary Romanesque art.

Halifax Minster is one of three churches in the county of West Yorkshire to be given this honorific title; the other two are Dewsbury Minster and Leeds Minster.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, generally known as The Round Church, is an Anglican church in the city of Cambridge, England. It is located on the corner of Round Church Street and Bridge Street. Since 1950 the church has been designated a Grade I listed building, and is currently managed by Christian Heritage. It is one of the four medieval round churches still in use in England.
English Gothic is an architectural style that flourished from the late 12th until the mid-17th century. The style was most prominently used in the construction of cathedrals and churches. Gothic architecture's defining features are pointed arches, rib vaults, buttresses, and extensive use of stained glass. Combined, these features allowed the creation of buildings of unprecedented height and grandeur, filled with light from large stained glass windows. Important examples include Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral and Salisbury Cathedral. The Gothic style endured in England much longer than in Continental Europe.
St Edith's Church, Shocklach, stands at the end of an isolated lane running toward the River Dee about 1 mile (2 km) to the north of the village of Shocklach, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building and its simple Norman work is considered to be unique in Cheshire. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Malpas. Its benefice is combined with that of St Mary, Tilston.
The Minster Church of All Saints or Rotherham Minster is the Anglican minster church of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The Minster is a prominent example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture and various architectural historians have rated it highly. Nikolaus Pevsner describes it as "one of the largest and stateliest churches in Yorkshire", Simon Jenkins states it is "the best work in the county", and Alec Clifton-Taylor calls it the "glory of Rotherham". With its tall spire, it is Rotherham's most predominant landmark, and amongst the tallest churches in Yorkshire.
Cranborne Priory is a former priory church in the village of Cranborne, Dorset, England. Founded in 980 as Cranborne Abbey, it became a priory in 1102, remaining that way until it was dissolved in 1540. The tower, nave and aisles from the priory survive to form the Church of St Mary and St Bartholomew, the parish church of Cranborne. The building, which has fragments from the 12th century, is designated a Grade I listed building.

It is located between the north-west corner of the market square, and Castlegate, on the B1257 road north of Helmsley Castle. The church was granted Grade II* listed building status on 4 January 1955.

The Church of St Mary of the Assumption is in Yorkshire Street, Burnley, Lancashire, England. It is an active Roman Catholic parish church in the diocese of Salford. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It was built between 1846 and 1849 to replace a smaller chapel on a different site. The church was designed by Weightman and Hadfield in Decorated style, and a chapel was added to it in 1879.
Charles Mawer (1839–1903) was an architectural sculptor, based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He was the son of sculptors Robert and Catherine Mawer and the cousin of William Ingle. He was apprenticed to his father, and worked within the partnership Mawer and Ingle alongside his cousin William and his own mother between 1860 and 1871, and then ran the stone yard himself until he formed a partnership with his fellow-apprentice Benjamin Payler in 1881. Following that date, his whereabouts and death are unknown. His last major work for Mawer and Ingle was Trent Bridge, where he carved alone, following the death of William Ingle. He is noted for his work on the rebuilding of the mediaeval Church of St Michael and All Angels, Barton-le-Street, completed in 1871, where he repaired and recreated damaged and missing Romanesque carvings, and for his carving on William Swinden Barber's 1875 Church of St Matthew, Lightcliffe. Charles' last known work ornaments another Barber church: the 1880 Church of St Thomas the Apostle, Killinghall. Charles was a member of the Mawer Group of Leeds architectural sculptors, which included those mentioned above, plus Matthew Taylor.
Mawer and Ingle was a company of architectural sculptors, based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, between 1860 and 1871. It comprised cousins Charles Mawer and William Ingle (1828–1870), and Catherine Mawer (1804–1877) who was mother of Charles and aunt of William. The group produced carvings on many Gothic Revival churches and their internal furnishings. They also worked on civic buildings, warehouses and offices. Many of these are now listed by Historic England, and many of the surviving buildings are within Yorkshire. Their work outside Yorkshire included Trent Bridge.

The church building is notable for its rood screen, the longest and oldest in the county, as well as its tall broach spire, a rare feature on churches in Devon.
