Stacey Eugene Pickering (born July 12,1968) is from Laurel,Mississippi,United States. Pickering has served as a Mississippi State Senator,as State Auditor of Mississippi,and as executive director of the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board.
Pickering represented District 42,based in Jones County,in the Mississippi State Senate,to which he was elected in 2003,after incumbent state senator,Vincent Scoper,decided to retire. [1] [2] [3]
Pickering was elected state auditor in 2007,when he defeated the Democrat Mike Sumrall,55 to 45 percent,in the general election. [4] He was sworn in on January 10,2008. [5] In 2011,Pickering received only third-party opposition as he defeated Reform Party nominee Ashley Norwood,76 to 24 percent. [6]
In June 2012,Pickering was honored with the National State Auditor's Association's "National Excellence in Accountability Award" for his work on accountability and oversight regarding the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. [7] In 2009,the United States Department of Defense honored him with a "Patriot Award" from its Mississippi Committee on Employer's Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in recognition of his extraordinary support of its employees who serve in the Mississippi National Guard and Reserve. [8] Pickering received this same award again in May,2013. [9]
In 2014,Pickering received the David M. Walker Excellence in Government Performance and Accountability Award,a national award presented once every two years to three auditors from the public sector accountability community who represent federal,state,and local governments. [10]
Pickering resigned in 2018. [11]
Pickering served as executive director of the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board (MSVA) from 2018 to 2022. In May 2022,MSVA issued a press release stating that Pickering and his chief of staff were both resigning. [11] Following the press release,WLBT News reported that Pickering resigned because he had an unprofessional relationship with his chief of staff. [12] [13] WLBT also alleged abuse of state time and alluded to a possible criminal probe. [12] [13] Subsequent analysis raised "significant questions about how the agency operated under Pickering,a former state auditor and legislator,and the workplace culture he cultivated." [14]

Laurel is a city in and the second county seat of Jones County,Mississippi,United States. As of the 2020 census,the city had a population of 17,161. Laurel is northeast of Ellisville,the first county seat,which contains the first county courthouse. It has the second county courthouse,as Jones County has two judicial districts. Laurel is the headquarters of the Jones County Sheriff's Department,which administers in the county. Laurel is the principal city of a micropolitan statistical area named for it. Major employers include Howard Industries,Sanderson Farms,Masonite International,Family Health Center,Howse Implement,Thermo-Kool,and South Central Regional Medical Center. Laurel is home to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art,Mississippi's oldest art museum,established by the family of Lauren Eastman Rogers.

The 2008 United States Senate special election in Mississippi was held on November 4,2008. This election was held on the same day of Thad Cochran's re-election bid in the regularly scheduled Class II election. The winner of this special election served the rest of the Senate term,which ended in January 2013. Unlike most Senate elections,this was a non-partisan election in which the candidate who got a majority of the vote won,and if the first-place candidate did not get 50%,a runoff election with the top two candidates would have been held. In the election,no run-off was necessary as Republican nominee and incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Roger Wicker won election to finish the term.

The 2018 United States Senate special election in Mississippi took place on November 6,2018,in order to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the state of Mississippi. On April 1,2018,a U.S. Senate vacancy was created when Republican senator Thad Cochran resigned due to health concerns. Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant appointed Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith to fill the vacancy. Hyde-Smith sought election to serve the balance of Cochran's term,which was scheduled to expire in January 2021.

A member of the Republican Party,White is the first millennial to hold statewide office in the Deep South. He was appointed to the position by Governor Phil Bryant in July 2018 and was subsequently elected without opposition in 2019. White won reelection in 2023 with 59% of the vote.
