Standing in Line in the Rain is the fourth studio album by Canadian folk singer-songwriter Ron Hynes, released independently in 1998.
In 1997, a few months after the release of Face to the Gale , EMI Music Canada dropped Hynes from their roster, leaving him without a record label. Undeterred by the loss of a major record label, Hynes produced a new album, Standing in Line in the Rain, which he released independently in 1998. [1] Containing a mixture of tracks recorded live and in the studio, [2] those recorded live were performed at the LSPU Hall, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, in May 1998, and those in the studio were recorded at Nickel Soundworks. [3]
Speaking of the album, Hynes told The Edmonton Journal in 1999, "It's almost all brand new material and it's a very rootsby sounding recording with lots of dobro and accordion. There are a couple of tunes that go for it, using a lot of electric slide guitar that were recorded as singles for the AM radio stations, but even those are true to what I've done on stage in the past." The album won "best new album" at the 1998 Media Innovation Awards (MIA) Awards. [4]
Hynes initially produced 1,000 copies of the album. Many were sold at his concerts and by February 1999, the album was into its third pressing (1,00 at a time) and had reached sales of around 2,500 copies in total. The copies that were sold elsewhere, away from the stage, were distributed by the company, Tidemark. [1] The album's front cover artwork was painted by Hynes' wife, Connie, and the name of the painting was also used as the title of the album. It was inspired by Bob Dylan's 1986 song "Brownsville Girl" which contains the line "I'm standin' in line in the rain to see a movie starring Gregory Peck". [1]
The album received a CD reissue in 2014 as a remastered and limited "collector's edition" with a new sleeve design featuring a painting by Adam Young. [5] It was exclusively available to order on Hynes' website, with each copy being hand-numbered and personally autographed. [6]

Aaron Badgley of AllMusic praised Hynes as a "gifted and talented singer/songwriter" who presents another album of his "own brand of Maritime folk music". He considered the music to be "instantly likable" and noted that some of the lyrics tackled "unique topics", such as on the opening track, "Picture of Dorian Gray". He also praised Hynes' voice for being "as strong as ever" and his band for being "tight" and "play[ing] beautifully". Badgley concluded, "This is an excellent example of East Coast folk music for all to enjoy. Although this album is not as strong as Face to the Gale, fans will still love it." [2]

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams, released on June 30, 1998, by Mercury Records. The album was recorded and co-produced by Williams in Nashville, Tennessee and Canoga Park, California, and features guest appearances by Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris.
Great Big Sea was a Canadian folk rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador, best known for performing energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs including sea shanties, which draw from the island's 500-year Irish, Scottish, and Cornish heritage. The Seldom Scene is an American bluegrass band that formed in 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland. The band's original line-up comprised John Starling on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Auldridge on Dobro and baritone vocals, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Tom Gray on double bass, and John Duffey on mandolin; the latter three also provided backing vocals. Together they released their debut studio album, Act I, in 1972, followed by both Act II and Act III in 1973.

D'Arcy Broderick is a Newfoundland musician who plays fiddle, guitar, mandola, banjo, accordion and mandolin. He is best known as a former member of the popular Irish-Newfoundland bands The Irish Descendants and The Fables. He is currently performing around Newfoundland with the band Middle Tickle. Alongside of him in the band are: William Broderick (Drums), Glenn Hiscock, Paul Hiscock and the only remaining original band member Ron Kelly. Glen Hiscock and William Broderick are occasionally absent from the weekly show Middle Tickle plays at Shamrock City Pub. Broderick was one of the owners of Shamrock City Pub, located in Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland. He left Shamrock City in 2017 and opened a new and traditional Irish pub named Broderick's Pub, situated at 201 Water Street in St. John's, in January 2020.

He was especially known for his composition "Sonny's Dream", which has been recorded worldwide by many artists and was named the 41st greatest Canadian song of all time on the 2005 CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version.
Darrell Power is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, music producer, and former member of Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea (1993–2003). He is a guest host of VOCM Nightline and Open Line. Power currently works as a substitute teacher. He lives in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
Heartsongs: Live from Home is a live album by Dolly Parton, released on September 27, 1994. Recorded at a concert at Parton's theme park Dollywood, the album featured a mix of Parton originals and traditional folk songs. "To Daddy" was one of Parton's compositions that she had never previously released; Emmylou Harris, who recorded the song in 1978, took her recording of the song to the U.S. country singles top three). The campy "PMS Blues" went on to become a concert favorite, and received a fair amount of airplay as an album track. Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh sang Irish vocals on "Barbara Allen".

"Sonny's Dream" is a folk song written by Newfoundlander Ron Hynes in 1976. It tells the story of a man who wishes to fulfill his dreams, but is bound to his rural homeland by his family, particularly his lonely mother. Hynes wrote the song while on a roadtrip with his band in western Canada and based it on his uncle, Thomas "Sonny" O'Neill, who had taught him how to play guitar and had pushed him to play music professionally. It was first recorded by The Wonderful Grand Band on their eponymous album, but appeared re-recorded on their second album Living in a Fog in 1981. Subsequent to the songwriter Ron Hynes' death, a crowd was organized for a singalong in Bannerman Park, St. John's in remembrance and celebration of his life.

It won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. The album is the band's first to feature Chance McCoy and their last with Gill Landry. Remedy also marks the return of founder member Critter Fuqua to the band's line-up.
