Stanley Jegede is a Nigerian entrepreneur, businessman [1] and philanthropist. He is considered one of the individuals who transformed the Nigerian telecommunications space, in almost two decades. [2] [3] He co-founded Phase3 Telecom, a firm licensed as National Long Distance Operator (NLDO) by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2003. [4] And he was instrumental in building the company from a local firm to one of West Africa's prominent digital infrastructure and, connectivity networks with an optic-fiber over power lines model. [5] He is currently Executive Chairman at Phase3 Telecom [6]

Early life

Jegede was born to Samuel and Victoria Jegede in Zaria, a city (one of the original seven Hausa city-states), situated in Nigeria's Northern territory and home to the Zazzau Emirate and Ahmadu Bello University - Nigeria's largest government-owned tertiary institution. [7] He grew up as a middle child flanked by both older and younger siblings under the tutelage of firm but loving parents. And he always credited his power of determination and strength of purpose to his mother and father's classroom of discipline, warmth, wisdom, and faithful instructions. [8]

Education

Jegede obtained a B.Sc. (honours) in business information systems from the University of North London in 1995 and M.Sc in business information technology from Middlesex University, in 1996.

Career

Prior to his business forays into the education and technology sectors, he worked as a Business Analyst in the United Kingdom between 1997 and 1999. He joined Verizon Communications (Formerly Bell Atlantic) USA, in 1999 as a Senior Business Analyst exiting in 2002 to launch a telecommunications company in Abuja, Nigeria. [9] Jegede is also a member of Gas Hub's board and is the chairman of Springhall British Schools [10]

Phase3 Telecom (Technologies)

In 2003, Jegede helped found Phase3 Telecom, a firm licensed to offer national long-distance transmission services using fiber optic, initially within the territory of Nigeria. Between 2014 and 2022, Phase 3 added two more subsidiaries - Coverage Broadband and P3Tech to venture into the enterprise business and technologies spaces [11] [12] [13] . Jegede was appointed as a member of the Broadband Committee [14] inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan. Phase 3 was awarded the International Arch of Europe award for Quality, a vanity award [15] as well as the Best Infrastructure Service Provider Award 2012, in the Africa-America International Business Awards. [16]

Philanthropy

In 2014, he launched the Stanley Jegede Foundation, a non-governmental organization solely set up to join local and global efforts in eradicating social and economic challenges facing Nigeria's local communities and indeed a larger part of the African continent. [17] Through projects that center on education, health, welfare, emergency relief, art heritage, and international/group support initiatives that run on frameworks with enhanced technological innovation and initiatives. [18] Education is considered the key platform as well as the driving force that is capable of engineering and sustaining the desired affluence for Africa and its people. And in 2016, the foundation ran its Education Development Program (EDP) in two northern states through advocacy, scholarships, mentor programs; donor/funding initiatives, and infrastructure projects. The Main One Cable is a submarine communications cable stretching from Portugal to South Africa with landings along the route in various west African countries. On April 28, 2008, it was announced that Main Street Technologies has awarded a turnkey supply contract for the Main One Cable System to Tyco Telecommunications.

Broadband is a term normally considered to be synonymous with a high-speed connection to the internet. Suitability for certain applications, or technically a certain quality of service, is often assumed. Phase 3 Telecom is an aerial fiber-optic network infrastructure provider, providing connectivity, network management, and data storage services to wholesale, enterprise, and retail customers across West Africa. The company was incorporated in 2003 and is headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. Licensed by the Nigerian Communications Commission in 2006 - the company in 2014, 2018, and 2022, added more kilometers to its existing coverage area with footprint expansion of its backbone, enterprise network, and broadband services. Phase operates 6,000 kilometres (3,700 mi) and counting open-access aerial fiber-optic network. The company, for over two decades has been vital to growth in Africa's growing ICT market, implementing the Wire Nigeria Project—conceived by the Nigerian Communications Commission to help provide broadband communications access to rural communities. Phase 3 has a broad range of wholesale and enterprise clients including Glo, MTN, 9Mobile, Ntel, Airtel, Smile Communications, World Bank, Julius Berger, Unity Bank, etc. Some of the African countries where the company currently has partner operations include Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and the Republic of Niger.

Olusola Teniola in London, is a technology enthusiast based in Lagos, Nigeria. Olusola Teniola is now engaged in various new projects in West Africa. He has been Nigeria National Coordinator for the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI.org) since Nov 2019. He is the Immediate Past President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON). Previously he was a Client Partner with Detecon International, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, Germany; responsible for Nigeria and West Africa. He was also CEO/MD and a board member of IS Internet Solutions in Lagos, Nigeria, from March 2013 to June 2016. In between Jan 2010 to Mar 2013, he was the COO and Director of Engineering at Phase 3 Telecom, Abuja.

Stealth Communications is an American fiber-based Internet service provider (ISP), installing and maintaining its own fiber optic network throughout New York City. Stealth began rolling out its Gigabit Internet services in late 2013 to businesses throughout Manhattan, using in-house employees to lay its own fiber-optic cabling. In July 2015, City of New York and Stealth announced a $5.3 million public/private partnership to expand fiber broadband into the Brooklyn and Queens Industrial Business Zones. As of May 2019, the company reported to have connected hundreds of commercial properties with fiber, over 80 fiber route miles.

Steve Babaeko is a Nigerian advertising and music executive, public advocate, founder of X3M Ideas, a Lagos-based digital advertising agency that was listed in 2017 as "one of Nigeria’s fastest growing communication agencies. He is also the founder/CEO of X3M Music, a record label that has as its marquee act, among others, Nigerian singer-songwriter Simi. He was on the 2018 jury of the New York Advertising Festival.

The use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) for financial transactions such as funds transfer, checking account balance and mobile airtime top-up from private bank accounts gained wide usage in Nigeria in 2015. The USSD services is widely promoted by commercial banks to optimize their financial services to customers and generate more revenue. But there was no agreement between telecommunications service providers and commercial banks as to who would offset USSD service charges.

Ahmadu Bello UniversityZaria is a federal government research university in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, opened in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria. It was founded by and is now named for Ahmadu Bello, first premier of Northern Nigeria.
