"Star" (stylized in all caps) is a song by American hip hop boy band Brockhampton and the fourth single from their debut studio album Saturation (2017).

Composition

The song features members Dom McLennon, Ameer Vann and Kevin Abstract, each of whom perform a verse. [1] It finds them name-dropping numerous celebrities as well as using pop culture references. [1] [2]

Critical reception

The Fader included the song on their list "The 101 best songs of 2017". [3] Live365 ranked "Star" as the best song by Brockhampton, [4] while Variety ranked it as the band's second best. [5]

Music video

The music video was directed by Kevin Abstract and premiered on May 30, 2017. It shows Brockhampton with blue skin and riding in a golf cart around South Los Angeles. [2] The video ends with a preview of another song by the band. [1]

Clifford Ian Simpson, known by his stage name Kevin Abstract, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter known for his role as a founding member of Brockhampton. He released his debut album, MTV1987, in 2014 to critical acclaim, and received attention from a number of major music blogs and magazine publications. His second album, American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story, was released in November 2016, his third, Arizona Baby, was released in April 2019, and his fourth, Blanket, was released in November 2023.

Brockhampton was an American hip hop boy band founded in 2010 as AliveSinceForever in San Marcos, Texas. Led by Kevin Abstract and formed partially through online music discussion forum KanyeToThe, Brockhampton was a self-described "boy band", so-called in an effort to redefine the term. Complex magazine describes the group as "gay, black, white, DIY, ambitious, all-inclusive, and would-be pop stars," and this diversity is what largely distinguishes their lyrics and sound. The group's final line-up consisted of vocalists Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Merlyn Wood, and Dom McLennon, vocalists/producers Joba, Bearface, and Jabari Manwa and producers Romil Hemnani and Kiko Merley, as well as graphic designer Henock "HK" Sileshi, photographer Ashlan Grey, web designer Roberto Ontenient, and manager Jon Nunes.
