Star St.Germain is an American game developer, artist, designer, illustrator, and musician based in San Francisco, California. [1] She is recognized for her work on the mixed reality game HoloVista , which won the Apple Design Award [2] and the Webby People's Choice Award. [3]

Early life and career

Star St.Germain was born on October 1, 1982, in Massachusetts. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) in Boston, after initially double-majoring in musical theater and scene design at another institution. [4] At MassArt, she specialized in the Studio for Interrelated Media, [5] studying various art forms including performance art, music, drawing, painting, animation, and video. [6]

Comics

St.Germain has been active in the comics industry as a writer, artist, colorist, and letterer. She has contributed to works published by Marvel, Image, and IDW Publishing. [7] Among her notable contributions are Strange Tales , [8] Girl Comics , [7] and Womanthology: Heroic. She worked on Comic Book Tattoo , [9] an anthology graphic novel based on the songs of Tori Amos that won both an Eisner and a Harvey Award.

Music and performance

St.Germain is a musician who plays the electric cello. [1] In 2003, she represented Boston at the National Poetry Slam. [10] While residing in Los Angeles, she took up roles in acting and modeling. During 2006–2007, St.Germain collaborated with photographer David LaChapelle. [8] She also appeared in music videos for Maroon 5 ("Won't Go Home Without You")[ citation needed ] and Beirut ("Elephant Gun"). [11] In 2009, she founded the band This Can't End Well, where she contributed as a lead songwriter, singer, guitarist, cellist, and electronic drummer. [8] She was featured on the 2020 Negativland album The World Will Decide. [12]

Game development

In 2016, St.Germain co-founded mixed reality game studio Aconite together with Nadya Lev. [13] Aconite's initial prototype, Limberlost, was designed as a location-based augmented reality game playable in bookstores or libraries worldwide.[ citation needed ]

In 2020, Aconite released HoloVista for iOS platforms. [14] The game received attention for its innovative gameplay mechanics, [15] visual style, [16] and narrative. [17] [18] The gameplay involves exploring 360-degree panoramic scenes, taking photographs, and solving puzzles. [19] The game received generally favorable reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic and won several awards, including the Apple Design Award, [2] Indiecade Best Narrative Award, [20] and Pocket Gamer's Most Innovative Game of the Year. [21] St.Germain's background in theatrical set design and comics influenced her art direction for the game's environmental design. [13] She has cited the concept of the memory palace [15] the book House of Leaves , and the artwork of J. H. Williams III as inspirations for the game's environments. [22]

In 2022, Aconite released the Bureau of Multiversal Arbitration, a multiplayer Discord game utilizing generative AI to facilitate collaborative storytelling. [23] The game was distinguished for being the first of its kind [24] and won the Breakthrough in Storytelling Award from the Columbia University School of the Arts' Digital Storytelling Lab [25] and a nomination at A Maze. Questionable Content is a slice-of-life webcomic written and illustrated by Jeph Jacques. It was launched in August 2003 and reached its 5,000th comic in March 2023. The plot originally centered on Marten Reed, an indie rock fan; his anthropomorphized personal computer Pintsize; and his roommate, Faye Whitaker. However, over time a supporting cast of characters has grown to include employees of the local coffee shop, neighbors, and androids. QC's storytelling style combines romantic melodrama, situational comedy, and sexual humor, while considering questions of relationships, sexuality, dealing with emotional trauma, and artificial intelligence and futurism.

<i>Sayonara Wild Hearts</i> 2019 video game

Sayonara Wild Hearts is a music-based action game created by Swedish developer Simogo and published by Annapurna Interactive. Described as a "pop album video game", Sayonara Wild Hearts follows the story of a heartbroken young woman through a surrealistic landscape. Each level of the game is set to a song, with the player guiding the woman while collecting hearts, avoiding obstacles, and fighting enemies. The game was released for iOS, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and tvOS devices in September 2019, for Windows in December 2019, and for Xbox One in February 2020. It was met with positive reviews for its visuals, soundtrack, and gameplay, and nominated for several year-end awards.

Marvel's Iron Man VR is a virtual reality shooter video game developed by Camouflaj. Based on the Marvel Comics superhero Iron Man, and inspired by the long-running comic book mythology and adaptations in other media, the game features a standalone narrative set within the same continuity as Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man games. Minecraft Earth was an augmented reality and geolocation-based sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios and Blackbird interactive and published by Xbox Game Studios. A spin-off of the video game Minecraft, it was first announced in May 2019, and was available on Android and iOS. The game was free-to-play, and was first released in early access on 17 October 2019. The game received its final update in January 2021 and officially shut down on 30 June 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Microsoft Holoportation is a project from Microsoft Research that demonstrates real-time holographic communications with the Microsoft Hololens. Holoportation is described as "a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high-quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed and transmitted anywhere in the world in real time. This allows users wearing virtual or augmented reality displays to see, hear and interact with remote participants in 3D, almost as if they were present in the same physical space. From an audio-visual perspective, communicating and interacting with remote users edges closer to face-to-face communication." The project was launched by Shahram Izadi and his Microsoft team in 2016. In March 2016, Alex Kipman performed a live demonstration of the technology at the TED conference as part of his talk. In 2020, Microsoft Mesh was launched which offered Holoportation capabilities to "project yourself as your most lifelike, photorealistic self in mixed reality to interact as if you are there in person"

Whitney "Strix" Beltrán is a narrative designer and Project Narrative Director at Hidden Path Entertainment. Her writing and design career includes the indie game Bluebeard's Bride. She also founded the advocacy initiative Gaming as Other to promote inclusivity in the gaming community.
