A statue of Thomas Anthony Dooley III by Rudolph Torrini, sometimes called Dr. Tom Dooley and Two Laotian Children, is installed on the University of Notre Dame campus, in the U.S. state of Indiana.
The statue of Thomas Anthony Dooley III with Lao children [1] is installed near the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Notre Dame. [2] [3] The bronze sculpture measures approximately 4 ft. 3 in. x 2 ft. 2 in. x 1 ft. 6 in., and rests on a concrete base that measures approximately 4 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. 1 in. x 4 ft. 6 in. A plaque reads: "THOMAS A. DOOLEY, M.D. '48 / 1927-1961 / Who as a pre-medical student / cherished Our Lady's Grotto / and who as a physician served the afflicted people of Southeast Asia / with uncommon devotion and dedication / Gift of the / Notre Dame Club of St. Louis / and the sculptor / Rudolph E. Torrini '59 / Dedicated February 1, 1986". [4]

Thomas Anthony Dooley III was an American physician who worked in Southeast Asia at the outset of American involvement in the Vietnam War. While serving as a physician in the United States Navy and afterwards, he became known for his humanitarian and anti-communist political activities up until his early death from cancer. After his death, the public learned that he had been recruited as an intelligence operative by the Central Intelligence Agency, and numerous descriptions of atrocities by the Viet Minh in his book Deliver Us From Evil had been fabricated.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Notre Dame, Indiana, is a Catholic church on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, also serving as the mother church of the Congregation of Holy Cross (C.S.C.) in the United States. The neo-gothic church has 44 large stained glass windows and murals completed over a 17-year period by the Vatican painter Luigi Gregori. The basilica bell tower is 230 feet (70 m) high, making it the tallest university chapel in America. It is a contributing building in Notre Dame's historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The basilica is a major tourist attraction in Northern Indiana, and is visited annually by more than 100,000 tourists.
Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Virgin Mary. She is venerated under this title by the Roman Catholic Church due to her apparitions that occurred in Lourdes, France. The first apparition of 11 February 1858, of which Bernadette Soubirous told her mother that a "Lady" spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle while she was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. Similar apparitions of the "Lady" were reported on 18 occasions that year, until the climax revelation in which she introduced herself as: "I am the Immaculate Conception". On 18 January 1862, the local Bishop of Tarbes Bertrand-Sévère Laurence endorsed the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes.

Some Lourdes grottos are almost identical reproductions of the scene of the apparitions, with statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and Bernadette Soubirous in a natural or artificial cave, while others may differ from the original in size, shape or style.

Rudolph Edward Torrini was an American artist best known for his sculptures, wood carvings and bronze public monuments in the St. Louis area, including "The Immigrants", "The Union Soldier," and "Martin Luther King." A student of Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, his work is also influenced by the works of Auguste Rodin. Torrini trained and taught Bob Cassilly, founder of the City Museum in St. Louis, and also helped establish the Master of Fine Arts program in Fontbonne College.

The current Grotto was built in 1896, replacing a wooden grotto built on August 22, 1878. It is located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame near South Bend, Indiana. The eight foot tall statue depicting the founder of Notre Dame is placed on the main quadrangle of the University near the Main Building. The statue, made of bronze, was unveiled on its campus on May 3, 1906.
