He participated in the fights of the Riverine Flotilla of the Polish Navy during the Polish-Bolshevik War. During the Invasion of Poland of 1939, he served as the commanding officer of Wicher, a destroyer of the Polish Navy which took part in the Battle of the Gdańsk Bay. [1] After the war, since 1947, he headed the Historical Detachment of the Naval Staff of Poland.
In 1917, Stefan de Walden graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg and began his service in the Imperial Russian Navy, with the rank of michman. He was part of the crew of the cruiser Askold, which was gripped by revolutionary sentiments, and was temporarily elected commander of the ship. In March 1919, he reached Poland and was accepted into the emerging Navy, with the rank of naval lieutenant. Initially, he served in the naval battalion in Modlin, then in the Pinsk Flotilla. During Poland's Wedding to the Sea, he was among the officers accompanying General Haller.
During the Polish-Soviet War, he was the commander of the armored motorboat MP-1, operating on the Pripyat and the Dnieper. He took part in the battle of Chernobyl with ships of the Bolshevik Dnieper Flotilla on April 27, 1920, which ended with the sinking of one of the Bolshevik gunboats. During the retreat he commanded the ammunition tug "Leon", which was sunk by its own crew in Pripyat. He continued to fight in the Vistula Flotilla during the war. In 1922 he served temporarily in the Navy Command. In 1925 he returned to the sea, as the watch officer of the gunboat "Komendant Piłsudski", with the rank of naval captain. Later he was the navigation officer on the "Wilia". In the years 1928-1930 he was again in the Navy Command. Between 1930 and 1933 as the second commander of the training sailing ship "Iskra" he participated in cruises to Cuba and the United States (the first transatlantic cruise of a Polish warship), to the Mediterranean Sea and to Casablanca and the Azores. On 1 January 1932 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1935, he took up the position of deputy commissioner for maritime affairs at the General Commissariat of the Republic of Poland in Gdańsk, and then the position of chief of staff of the Coastal Defense Command. On April 1, 1938, he was appointed commander of the destroyer "Wicher". On March 19, 1939, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.
On board "Wicher", he took part in the first days of fighting in the defense of the Polish coast. On September 3, 1939, he fought an artillery duel with two German destroyers. That same afternoon, "Wicher" was sunk by Luftwaffe bombs. Until the capitulation of Hel, he participated in its defense as head of communications. On the night of October 1-2, commanding a group of officers, he attempted to break through the German blockade of the peninsula on board the cutter "Hel-117". Taken prisoner, he was held in Oflag XVIII A Lienz[in other languages] and II C Woldenberg until 30 January 1945. After liberation, he returned to service in the PMW, and in 1945 he became head of the Navy Department at the General Staff in Warsaw. In 1947, he led the naval mission in London, conducting talks on the return to Poland of the Polish ships remaining there. On 27 June of that year, he signed the protocol for the acceptance of the destroyer "Błyskawica" and sailed on board it to Poland. Also in 1947, he was promoted to the rank of commander and returned to service in the General Staff. In 1948, he published an article in "Przegląd Morski" entitled "The Last Days of "Wichra" 30 VIII–3 IX 1939. After returning to the Coast, he became head of the Historical Department at the Main Staff of the Navy. He joined the reserve in the rank of commander, after which he began working at the Maritime Office in Gdynia, as head of department. He was also a juror of the Maritime Chamber. He died in 1976 and was buried in Gdańsk.

ORP Gryf was a large Polish Navy minelayer, sunk during the 1939 German invasion of Poland. She was one of two large Polish ships that were not evacuated to Great Britain during Operation Peking prior to the outbreak of the Polish Defensive War. She was sunk in Hel harbour on 3 September 1939 during the opening stage of World War II.
Józef Unrug was a Polish admiral who helped establish Poland's navy after World War I. During the opening stages of World War II, he served as the Polish Navy's commander-in-chief. As a German POW, he refused all German offers to change sides and was incarcerated in several Oflags, including Colditz Castle. He stayed in exile after the war in the United Kingdom, Morocco and France where he died and was buried. In September 2018 he was posthumously promoted in the rank of vice admiral by the President of Poland. After 45 years his remains, along with those of his wife Zofia, were exhumed from Montrésor and taken in October 2018 to his final resting place in Gdynia, Poland.
Roman Krzyżelewski was the commander-in-chief of the Polish Navy between October 2003 and November 2007. For most of his career he was a Submarine Officer, although he started his career as a Weapons Conscript on board an Osa-class missile boat
The Battle of Danzig Bay took place on 1 September 1939, at the beginning of the invasion of Poland, when Polish Navy warships were attacked by German Luftwaffe aircraft in Gdańsk Bay. It was the first naval-air battle of World War II.
ORP Wicher, the lead ship of the Wicher class, was a Polish Navy destroyer. She saw combat in the Invasion of Poland, which began World War II in Europe. She was the flagship of the Polish Navy, sunk by German bombers on 3 September 1939.
This article details the order of battle of the Polish Navy prior to the outbreak of World War II and the Polish Defensive War of 1939. Following World War I, Poland's shoreline was relatively short and included no major seaports. In the 1920s and 1930s, such ports were built in Gdynia and Hel, and the Polish Navy underwent a modernisation program under the leadership of Counter-Admiral Józef Unrug and Vice-Admiral Jerzy Świrski. Ships were acquired from France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, and the navy was to be able to secure the Polish supply lines in case of a war against the Soviet Union. By September 1939 the Polish Navy consisted of 5 submarines, 4 destroyers, and various support vessels and mine-warfare ships.
Viktor Lomidze, also known by his Polish name of Wiktor Łomidze-Wachtang, was a Georgian-Polish military officer. After the Bolshevik take-over of his country in early 1920s he emigrated to Poland, where he joined the Polish Army and then the Polish Navy.
Rear Admiral Józef Czeslaw Bartosik, was a Polish Naval officer who served in Polish destroyers under British naval command during the Second World War. Shortly after the war, he joined the British Royal Navy and advanced to the rank of rear admiral, before his retirement in 1968. He died in England at age 90.
Kontradmirał Włodzimierz Steyer was a Polish naval officer before and during the Second World War. During the Invasion of Poland in 1939 he commanded the Polish land forces defending the Hel Peninsula in what became known as the Battle of Hel, the longest-lasting battle of the campaign. After the war he briefly served as the commanding officer of the entire Polish Navy. Steyer was also an author of novels under the pen-name "Brunon Dzimicz".
Jerzy Włodzimierz Świrski was a Polish rear admiral and officer in the Russian Imperial Navy and later the Polish Navy. As Chief of the Polish Naval Command (1925-1947), he was a member of an elite group of high ranking Polish naval officers from foreign navies who became founder members of the re-established naval forces of the newly independent Poland after World War I. During World War II, Polish naval forces under his command, were embedded with the Royal Navy and contributed significantly to the success of Britain's maritime war effort. He notably fell out with Poland's war time Prime Minister-in-exile, General Sikorski, but was backed by the British and survived in post. He was appointed an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.
Adam Mohuczy (1891–1953) was a Polish Navy officer. Captain of several ships and squadrons, Counter Admiral from 1946 and Chief of Staff and Commander of the Polish Navy from 1945 to 1947. In 1949 arrested by Polish secret police, accused of sabotage, tortured. He died in prison in 1953. In 1957 he was rehabilitated.
Stefan Frankowski was a Polish Captain, posthumously promoted to Rear Admiral. An officer of surface naval ships, from 1908 to 1917 he served in the Russian Imperial Navy and participated in the First World War. Later he joined the Polish Navy and commanded a squadron of torpedo boats, was the commander of the Polish Navy NCO School, and was chief of Director Staff of Polish Navy. During the Invasion of Poland of 1939 he was a commander of Naval Coast Defence. Taken prisoner of war by the Germans, he died in captivity in 1940.
Zbigniew Przybyszewski (1907–1952) was a Polish military officer and a Commander in the Polish Navy. During the early stages of World War II he served with distinction as the commanding officer of the coastal artillery station at Hel Peninsula. After the war he returned to Poland from a prisoner of war camp and resumed his service, rising to the post of CO Coastal Artillery and deputy commander of the Naval Branch of the General Staff. Arrested by Stalinist authorities under false charges of espionage, he was sentenced to death in a show trial and executed.
