The Stehli family is a Swiss industrial and political family that has been prominent in silk manufacturing and politics since the early 19th century. [1] [2] In 1897, the family built one of the largest textile concerns in the world, primarily active in the United States, more specifically in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The concern was known as Stehli Silk Corporation. [3] [4] A daughter of Emil Stehli-Hirt (1868–1945), Margaretha Emerentia Frölicher-Stehli, has been a first class passenger and survivor of the Titanic. [5]
The Stehli family is first referred in records of 1321 in Rifferswil. The founding father of the family in Obfelden was Hensli Stehli (1416). The Stehli family received municipal citizenship of Zürich in 1490.
The modern Stehli dynasty originally hails from Ottenbach where Rudolf Stehli-Hausheer (1816-1884) laid the foundation for the textile concern Stehli Silks. In 1837/38 he began to manufacture cotton and in fully switched to silk in 1840. [6]
After the dissolution of the manufacturing business during the textile downturn of the 1970s a lot of the historical archive materials were lost. Most recently under the history research project Silk History since 1800 led by historian Alexis Schwarzenbach, the remains of the company archive was put in the State Archive of Zurich for historic preservation. François Paul Lachenal was a Swiss publisher and diplomat, who beginning in 1940 played a significant role in publishing the writings of the French authors during the occupation of France by Germany. He was member of the Swiss delegation in Vichy till 1944 and later till 1945 at the Swiss embassy in Berlin. Publisher of the magazine Traits he was son of Genevan politician Paul Lachenal, nephew of The president of the Swiss Confederation Adrien Lachenal and married to Johanna Bertha Caroline Otken. He is buried at the Cimetière des Rois in Geneva.

Conzett & Huber was a Swiss publishing house known for the magazines Du and Zürcher Illustrated. In 1908, Verena Conzett made the decision to expand her small print shop into the magazine publisher Conzett & Cie, with lawyer Emil Huber as a "silent shareholder". Huber took over operational management of the company in 1918. By 1929, the company was known as Conzett & Huber.
The Fabbrica di Cioccolato Cima Norma S.A., also Chocolat Cima-Norma S.A., in Torre-Dangio was an industrial chocolate production company in the canton of Ticino. It was founded in 1903 by the Cima brothers. It went bankrupt in 1968. Stehli Silks was a Swiss textile manufacturing company. Founded in 1837, Stehli Silks was among the largest silk fabric producers in the world, with a workforce exceeding 4,000 people (1920) at its peak. More than half of its workforce was employed at the subsidiary Stehli Silks Corporation in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which opened in 1897.
Gustav Adolf Bühler commonly referred to as Adolf Bühler Jr. was a Swiss industrialist, philanthropist and politician. He was the eldest son of Adolf Bühler and majority owner of Bühler Brothers. Bühler served on the Cantonal Council of St. Gallen from 1898 to 1906 for the Free Radical Liberals. He was a member of the Bühler family.
