Steingrímur Jóhann Sigfússon (born 4 August 1955) is an Icelandic politician. He has been a member of the Althing (Icelandic parliament) since 1983 and was the founding chairman of the Left-Green Movement (Vinstri hreyfingin –grænt framboð) from 1999 until 2013. He was the Minister for Agriculture and Communications from 1988 to 1991. [1] He was Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2011. [2] In 2011,he took on the roles of Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture and Minister of Economic Affairs. He was first elected as a member of the People's Alliance and helped found the Left-Green Movement after the merger of the People's Alliance into the more moderate Social Democratic Alliance.
Steingrímur was born in Gunnarsstaðir,a large sheep farm between Garður and Þórshöfn in the Þistilfjörður region of northeast Iceland (Svalbarðshreppur municipality). In his younger days he was an avid sportsman, both track and field and also a volleyball player. On 16 January 2006,Steingrímur was injured in a car accident not far from Blönduós but later recovered.
He supported the end of the US military presence in Iceland, but believed Iceland itself should have taken the initiative in ending this presence. Since September 2006,when US forces left Naval Air Station Keflavik,he has strongly opposed any possible development of an Icelandic army seeing the country's need for armed forces as practically non-existent. He believes that civilian institutions such as the police and the coast guard should be organized in order to provide the needed protection in the unlikely event of a major disturbance. [3]
In November 2006,he published the book Viðöll –Íslenskt velferðarsamfélag átímamótum ("All of Us –Icelandic Welfare Society at Crossroads"),laying out his political ideology. [4] [5]
The politics of Iceland take place in the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the president is the head of state, while the prime minister of Iceland serves as the head of government in a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the parliament, the Althingi. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
The Social Democratic Alliance is a social democratic political party in Iceland. The party is positioned on the centre-left of the political spectrum and their leader is Kristrún Frostadóttir, who has been leader since 2022,and has served as Prime Minister of Iceland since 21 December 2024.
The Progressive Party is an agrarian political party in Iceland.
Steingrímur Hermannsson was an Icelandic politician who served as prime minister of Iceland from 1983 to 1987,and again from 1988 to 1991. He was the chairman for the Progressive Party from 1979 to 1994.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Iceland since 27 June 2010. A bill providing for a gender-neutral marriage definition was passed by the Althing on 11 June 2010. No members of Parliament voted against the bill, and polling suggested that it was very popular among Icelanders. Iceland was the third Nordic country, after Norway and Sweden, the seventh in Europe, and the ninth in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.
Steingrímur Steinþórsson was an Icelandic politician. He served as speaker of the Althing from 1949 to 1950. He served as prime minister of Iceland from 14 March 1950 to 11 September 1953. He was a member of the Interim Triumvirate from 26 January to 31 July 1952,and was a member of the Progressive Party, though never its chairman. He served as Minister of Agriculture and Social Affairs from 1953 to 1956.
The Icelandic Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture is a cabinet-level ministry. It is an important economic ministry, with fisheries products making up about 40% of Iceland's exports.
Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is an Icelandic politician, who served as prime minister of Iceland from 2009 to 2013.
Bjarni Benediktsson, known colloquially as Bjarni Ben,is an Icelandic former politician who served as the prime minister of Iceland from January to November 2017 and again from April to December 2024. He has been the leader of the Icelandic Independence Party since 2009,and served as the minister of finance and economic affairs from 2013 to 2017,a post he later retained under Katrín Jakobsdóttir and held until his resignation in October 2023. After serving briefly as the minister for foreign affairs from 2023 to 2024,Bjarni became prime minister again on 9 April 2024.

Northeast is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established in 2003 following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland when the Northeastern constituency was merged with the Eastern constituency and Siglufjörður municipality from the Northwestern constituency. Northeast consists of the regions of Eastern and Northeastern. The constituency currently elects nine of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2024 parliamentary election it had 31,071 registered electors.
The Second cabinet of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir in Iceland was formed 10 May 2009. The cabinet left office on 23 May 2013.
A referendum on the resumption of European Union membership negotiations has been proposed to be held in Iceland. The referendum was suggested after the Independence Party and the Progressive Party formed a coalition government following the April 2013 parliamentary elections. The previous Social Democratic Alliance led government had suspended opening of new chapters within the accession negotiations prior to the election, and the incoming government vowed not to resume them unless they were first given a mandate to do so by a referendum.
Parliamentary elections were held in Iceland on 25 September 2021 to elect the members of the Althing. Following the elections, the three parties in the ruling coalition government –the Independence Party,Progressive Party and Left-Green Movement –agreed to continue in office, with Katrín Jakobsdóttir of the Left-Green Movement remaining Prime Minister despite her party being the smallest of the three. It was the first time an incumbent government had retained power in an election since the 2008 financial crisis.
