Stephan Streker is a Belgian film director and screenwriter.

Biography

Stephan Streker was born in Brussels, and first became a journalist with the aim of meeting the people he admired most in the world – filmmakers. In this capacity, he published lengthy interviews for the Belgian press. [1]

He also worked as a film critic for both radio and print media and as a photographer (artistic, press and portraiture), producing numerous album covers. [2]

In parallel to these occupations, Stephan was a sports journalist, specializing in soccer and boxing. [3]

A Wedding (Noces) is his third feature-length film following Michael Blanco  [ fr ] (2004), shot “guerilla” style in Los Angeles with the help of a few friends, and The World Belongs to Us  [ fr; nl ] (2013) starring Vincent Rottiers, Olivier Gourmet and Reda Kateb. [4] A Wedding has been selected in over 40 Film Festivals worldwide, earning more than 15 awards. The movie has been nominated at the César 2018 in the category Best Foreign Film.

In addition to his job as a filmmaker, Streker is also a soccer consultant for Belgian national television (RTBF), in particular for all games involving the Red Devils (the national team), and also for the weekly television show La Tribune. [5]

Honour killing of Sadia Sheikh 2007 Pakistani–Belgian honour killing incident

The honour killing of Sadia Sheikh occurred on 22 October 2007, when a 20-year-old Belgian woman of Pakistani heritage was fatally shot by her brother, an act of sororicide. The murder occurred in Lodelinsart, Charleroi. Sheikh had left her family home after her parents pressured her to marry a cousin who she had never met, later moving in with a Belgian man, but had visited to try to make peace. Her brother confessed to the murder in a 2011 trial, claiming that he had acted alone, but a jury pronounced all four members of the family guilty of the murder and sentenced each to prison. The case has been called Belgium's first honour killing trial.

The André Cavens Award was introduced in 1976 by the organizing committee to honor cinematic achievement in Belgium. The name of the award comes from film director André Cavens.

A Wedding is a 2016 internationally co-produced drama film directed by Stephan Streker. It was screened in the Discovery section at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. It received eight nominations at the 8th Magritte Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Streker, and won two. It is based on the honour killing of Sadia Sheikh. Streker described the film as a Greek tragedy.

The 8th Magritte Awards ceremony, presented by the Académie André Delvaux, honored the best films of 2017 in Belgium and took place on 3 February 2018 at the Square in the historic site of Mont des Arts, Brussels, beginning at 8:45 p.m. CET. During the ceremony, the Académie André Delvaux presented Magritte Awards in 22 categories. The ceremony was televised in Belgium by La Deux, after RTBF took over broadcast rights from BeTV. Actress Natacha Régnier presided the ceremony, while Fabrizio Rongione hosted the show for the third time.
