Stephen Rooney (born 1994) is a hurler from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He plays for Antrim Championship club St. Paul's and at inter-county level with the Antrim senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a corner-back.

Career

A member of the St. Paul's club in Belfast, Rooney had been a member of the club's junior team for almost a decade when they won the County Junior Championship title in 2020. [1] He made his first appearance on the inter-county scene as a member of the Antrim minor team that won the Ulster Minor Championship titles in 2011. [2] Rooney made his debut with the Antrim senior hurling team in 2014. Since then he has won two Joe McDonagh Cup titles and two National League Division 2A titles. [3]

The Joe McDonagh Cup is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It forms the second tier of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship and is the second highest level of inter-county championship hurling competition in Ireland. The last of the five tiers to be established, the competition was contested for the first time in 2018.

The 2020 Joe McDonagh Cup was the third staging of the Joe McDonagh Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 2018. The competition was initially scheduled to begin on 10 May 2020 and end on 29 June 2020. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games, the first-round games were delayed until 25 October 2020.
