Stephen T. Ayers (born 1962),FAIA,LEED AP,is an American architect who served as the 11th Architect of the Capitol, [1] from 2010 to 2018.
Ayers has been a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration since 2020. [2]
Ayers served in the United States Air Force from 1985 to 1990. [2] and a licensed architect in the State of California.[ citation needed ]
In February 2007,Ayers assumed the office as Acting Architect. [3]
On May 12,2010,Ayers was unanimously confirmed as permanent Architect by the United States Senate. [3]
Ayers was the first Architect of the Capitol to be certified as an Accredited Professional in the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. He sought to reduce energy consumption on Capitol Hill. [4]
In 2011,Ayers received the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence from the Construction Industry Institute. [5] He retired from the role of Architect of the Capitol on November 23,2018. [3]
The Architect of the Capitol is the federal agency responsible for the maintenance,operation,development,and preservation of the United States Capitol Complex. It is an agency of the legislative branch of the federal government and is accountable to the United States Congress and the Supreme Court. Both the agency and the head of the agency are called "Architect of the Capitol". The head of the agency is appointed by a vote of a congressional commission for a ten-year term. Prior to 2024,the president of the United States appointed the Architect upon confirmation vote by the United States Senate,and was accountable to the president.
The Dirksen Senate Office Building is the second office building constructed for members of the United States Senate in Washington,D.C.,and was named for the late Minority Leader Everett Dirksen from Illinois in 1972.
