Steve England is a British radio producer and disc-jockey known for his involvement in pirate radio and pioneering production work in radio jingles.

Biography

England was a disc-jockey on the offshore pirate radio stations Radio Caroline, Radio Mi Amigo, and Radio Atlantis where he also became programme director. [1] [2] [3] England then went on to broadcast for one of the first independent local radio stations in the UK, Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. [4]

After spending time as head of commercial production, England started a partnership with Alan Fawkes and set up Alfasound in 1979. England and Alfasound were one of the earliest proponents of jingle packages in the United Kingdom. [5] The company produced many jingle packages for UK and European radio stations from its base in Sale, Greater Manchester; one such package was for the Italian radio station, Radio Nova International. [6]

Alan Fawkes and Steve England parted company in 1997 after serious disagreements and England set up his own production company. In 2001, he merged his company with S2Blue. [7] He acts as the UK and Ireland agent for Jam Creative Productions and PAMS productions of Dallas, Texas, meaning that stations can have many classic radio jingles re-sung with their name.[ citation needed ]

England also presented on and helped to set up Moorlands Radio, the community radio station for the Staffordshire Moorlands based in Leek, Staffordshire. [8]

England retired from the business in 2011, but occasionally still performs voice-overs.[ citation needed ] As of 2023, England presents weekend shows on Atlantis Radio featuring vintage jingles and 60s songs. [9]

While the station was dubbed a pirate radio station, its operation took place within the law and its offices were in the West End of London. Its representation was by a company formed earlier in the year to represent in Europe the ABC radio and television stations of the United States.

Laser 558 was an offshore pirate radio station launched in May 1984 using disc jockeys from the US. It broadcast from the Panama-registered ship MV Communicator in international waters in the North Sea. Within months the station had a large audience, due to its strong signal and continuous music, mixing current records with oldies. However, insufficient advertising starved the station off the air in late 1985. In 1986 an attempt was made to return as Laser Hot Hits, but the same problems arose.

Alfasound was a radio jingle production company based in Manchester from late 1970s to mid-1990s founded by Alan Fawkes and ex-Piccadilly Radio DJ Steve England.

Moorlands Radio is a community radio station based in Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands, England. It was granted the full-time licence in the second round of community radio licensing by broadcast regulator Ofcom in February 2008. Contact 94 was a radio station that broadcast from Lessay in Northern France to Normandy and the Channel Islands between September 1988 and November 1991. The station broadcast on various frequencies during its time on air, including 94.4 FM, 93.8 FM, 94.6 FM and 97.7 FM.
