Steven Edward Gaughan (born 14 April 1970) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder for various clubs in the Football League. Whilst at Chesterfield he featured in their memorable run to the 1997 FA Cup semi finals, coming on as a substitute in their quarter final victory over Wrexham. [3] However, he did not play in the semi-final itself, as Chesterfield ultimately lost to Middlesbrough after a replay.

Jamie Hewitt is a former footballer who played as a defender for Chesterfield and Doncaster Rovers. He was a member of the Chesterfield 1997 FA Cup team that made it to the semi-finals. In the semi-final at Old Trafford, Chesterfield were trailing Premiership Middlesbrough 3–2 in extra time when he headed in a 119th-minute equaliser. Chesterfield however lost the replay 3–0. He is classed as a legend by the Chesterfield fans because of this and also his great career for the club. He later worked at the club as a physiotherapist.

The 1996 Football League Third Division play-off Final was a football match played at Wembley Stadium on 25 May 1996, to determine the fourth and final team to gain promotion from the Third Division to the Second Division of the Football League in the 1995–96 season.

Christopher Paul Beaumont is an English retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder for several teams in the Football League(Stockport County being the club who held his heart though). Perhaps his best remembered spell was with Chesterfield which saw Beaumont score the winning goal in the 1996-97 FA Cup quarter final against Wrexham. He also came on as a substitute in the semi-final against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford and set up Jamie Hewitt's dramatic equaliser to take the tie to a replay. Beaumont played for the Spireites over 150 times and left the club in 2001 which resulted in a spell at Ossett Town. Beaumont used to run a post office but now works at a local secondary school in Sheffield as a head of year. He is known to attend frequent Stockport County matches when time allows.

The 1996 Football League Second Division play-off Final was a football match played at Wembley Stadium on 26 May 1996, at the end of the 1995–96 English league season to determine the final promoted club from the Second Division. Bradford City beat Notts County 2–0 to join Swindon Town and Oxford United in winning promotion to the First Division. It was the 10th Second Division play-off Final and the seventh to be held at Wembley.
