"Stillbirth" is the debut solo single by Canadian singer-songwriter Alice Glass, released on 17 July 2015. It is Glass' first release since her departure from Crystal Castles in 2014.
On 8 October 2014, Glass announced her departure from Crystal Castles for professional and personal reasons. In the announcement, she noted that working within the band compromised her efforts towards "sincerity, honesty, and empathy for others". [1] Following her departure, she embarked on a solo career. [2] She made her debut with "Stillbirth" on 15 July 2015 with no label involved. All proceeds from the song's sales benefit organizations (such as RAINN) that help survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and incest. [3] The lyrics were written by Glass with the music being composed by Glass and Jupiter Keyes in their basement. [4] [5]
Noisey called "Stillbirth" "the most powerful track of [Glass'] musical career to date," elaborating: "it's a thunderous and beautiful assault on the senses that brings the best of the two songwriters together. With a clear refrain of "I want to start again" cutting straight through a sonic electrical storm, Glass is very much alive - and her voice has never sounded better." [6] Dazed said the track is "an explosive, punch-to-the-gut sort of song where she screamed, "I've been waiting for you to die" over dystopic, stabbing synths," later noting: "It's not just the relentless, buzz wire synths, icy wall of distortion and screaming vocals that makes "Stillbirth" a stand-out, but the powerful statement that she posted alongside it." [7] Laura Snapes of Pitchfork compared the song to "On Sight" from Kanye West's Yeezus , saying that they both feature "dystopian piledriver synths and unflinching statement of presence in the face of systematic oppression." NME 's Rhian Daly stated, "Musically, it's not worlds apart from Crystal Castles, all discordant electro noise colliding underneath Glass' strained, urgent vocals. There are lulls between the storms of sound – perhaps hints at the track's yet-to-be revealed "sister song that Glass describes as a "lullaby" – that offer pensive breaks in the chaos, only for it to build back up again, like the waves of a tsunami crashing down one by one," continuing: "'Stillbirth' is the sound of the Canadian singer releasing a truckload of pent-up emotions. It's angry, raw and uncompromising – a battering ram aimed right at the heart at those who've wronged her and a spine-tingling rise from the ashes. It's also the start of what looks to be a very exciting and promising solo career from Glass. With 'Stillbirth’, she's finally got the new start that she’s been fighting for." [8] Alt Citizen described the song as "a dark, industrial electronic track, with visceral lyrics that read like a diary entry gone wrong," further stating: "It's compelling, raw, and an incredibly brave account about her experience trapped in an abusive relationship. With "Stillbirth" you can't help but feel ignited with anger, but Glass's recognizable, high-pitched wails turn a heart-breaking song into an enjoyable electro-punk track." [9]

Crystal Castles was a Canadian electronic music group formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, formed by songwriter-producer Ethan Kath and singer-songwriter Alice Glass, who later left and was replaced by Edith Frances. Crystal Castles were known for their chaotic live shows and lo-fi melancholic homemade productions. They released many limited vinyl singles between 2006 and 2007 before releasing four studio albums between 2008 and 2016.

In 2014, she embarked on a solo career. She released her eponymous debut EP in 2017. Her solo debut album, Prey//IV, was released in February 2022.
Claudio Paolo Palmieri, known professionally as Ethan Kath, is a Canadian musician. He was the co-founder and songwriter/producer for Crystal Castles and bassist of Kïll Cheerleadër and Die Mannequin.
Nika Roza Danilova, known professionally by her stage name Zola Jesus, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. Her music has been noted for combining elements of electronic, industrial, classical, and goth. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, she spent her formative years in northern Wisconsin, where she began writing and recording music independently while attending college. During her second year of studies, she released two singles through the independent label Sacred Bones, followed by two EPs. Her debut album, The Spoils, was released in 2009.
Crystal Castles II is the second studio album by Canadian electronic music duo Crystal Castles, released on May 24, 2010 by Fiction Records and Last Gang Records. The album was initially scheduled for release on June 7, 2010; however, the release dates were moved forward after the album leaked online, thus a digital version of the album was released on April 23, 2010.
"Apple of Sodom" is a song by American rock band Marilyn Manson. The track was recorded for the soundtrack to David Lynch's 1997 film Lost Highway. It was written by the band's eponymous vocalist and produced by Manson with Sean Beavan. Lynch personally chose the band to contribute music to the soundtrack as he found Manson inspiring, and because of the band's commercial viability. An industrial song about obsession, "Apple of Sodom" was named after the eponymous fruit, and was inspired by Manson's feelings about singer Fiona Apple. The song was followed by multiple collaborations between Manson and Lynch.

Amnesty (I), also titled Amnesty I and sometimes referred to as Amnesty, is the fourth and final studio album by electronica duo Crystal Castles, released on August 19, 2016, on Fiction Records and Casablanca Records. It is their first album since the departure of previous frontwoman Alice Glass in 2014, and the first to feature new vocalist Edith Frances. It is also their first album not titled after their band name. Amnesty is also the band's shortest album to date, even with the extra runtime on the physical version. The album received lukewarm reviews by music publications, who criticized the album for having an outdated sound and not being as inspired as their past works.

Miss Anthropocene is the fifth studio album by Canadian musician Grimes. It was released on February 21, 2020, through 4AD. It marked her first album in over four years, after the release of 2015's Art Angels. The album was officially announced on March 19, 2019. The name of the album is a pun on the feminine title "Miss", and the words "misanthrope" and "Anthropocene", a neologism popularised in the year 2000 by Paul J. Crutzen that was proposed to denote the current geological age the Earth is in. The album is a loose concept album about an "anthropomorphic goddess of climate change" inspired by Roman mythology and villainy. Miss Anthropocene is Grimes' final album on record label 4AD, to which she has been signed since 2012. The album is darker in style than Grimes' 2015 album Art Angels, containing inspiration from the sounds of industrial music.
Lauren Auder is a British-French singer-songwriter and record producer. Born in Watford and raised in the French town of Albi, she began her career producing for underground French and English rap artists. Auder signed to True Panther Sounds and made her solo debut in 2018 with the EP Who Carry's You, which was followed by the EP Two Caves In in 2020. Her debut album, The Infinite Spine, was released on 18 July 2023.
Prey//IV is the debut studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Alice Glass. It was released on 16 February 2022 by Eating Glass Records. It is her first collection of solo material since the release of her self-titled EP released five years prior. The album title and track listing were revealed on 19 November 2021. The release of the album was preceded by four singles, "Suffer and Swallow", "Baby Teeth", "Fair Game", and "Love Is Violence". To promote the album, Glass embarked on a 15-date tour of the United States, the Traumabond Tour, from the 7 September to 31 October, 2022.
