Stony Plain Records is a Canadian independent record label, which specializes in roots music genres such as country, folk, and blues. [1] The label has released more than 300 albums.

History

Stony Plain was founded by Holger Petersen and Alvin Jahns in 1976. [2] The label released their first album that year. Beginning in 1989, the label's releases were distributed by Warner Music Canada [1] Petersen acted as the company's president for many years. [3]

Stony Plain has previously licensed recordings from American labels Rounder Records, Sugar Hill Records, HighTone Records and Blind Pig Records for Canadian release. The label has also been the Canadian distributor for albums by American artists such as Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris.

The label was still owned and operated by its founders Alvin Jahns and Holger Petersen. Petersen is also the author of two books of artist interviews and also hosts the weekly series Saturday Night Blues on CBC Radio One, Radio Two and SiriusXM 169 and Natch'l Blues on the CKUA Radio Network. [4] In 2018, the company was sold to Linus Entertainment, and moved from Stony Plain, Alberta, to Waterdown, Ontario. [5]

In 2016, Stony Plain celebrated its 40th anniversary by releasing a three-disc compilation album of highlights from its collection. [4] [6]

Recognition for the label and its artists includes 11 Juno Awards, six Grammy Award nominations, several Blues Music Awards, nine Canadian Country Music Awards for Label of the Year, more than 30 Maple Blues Awards and a number of Western Canada Music Awards. Stony Plain Records has earned several Gold and Platinum records for releases by artists as Ian Tyson, Corb Lund and various Best Of compilations. [8]

The label was the recipient of The Blues Foundation's Keeping the Blues Alive Award [9] in 2014.

Saturday Night Blues is a Canadian radio program, which airs Saturday nights on CBC Music. Hosted by Holger Petersen, the program airs a mix of blues concerts, recordings and interviews with blues musicians. SNB first broadcast on CBC Radio One in 1987. Initially airing for one hour weekly, the program was expanded to two hours in 1990.

Holger Petersen, is a Canadian businessman, record producer and radio broadcaster. He founded the independent roots music record label Stony Plain Records in 1975 with partner Alvin Jahns. The label was sold to True North/Linus Music in 2018, but Petersen continues to act as executive producer on many recording projects. He was born in Pellworm Island, West Germany.

Amos Garrett is an American-Canadian blues and blues-rock musician, guitarist, singer, composer, and musical arranger. He has written instructional books about music and guitar. Garrett holds dual citizenship and was raised in Toronto and Montreal. He is best known for his guitar solos on Maria Muldaur's recording "Midnight at the Oasis", and on Paul Butterfield's Better Days recording of "Please Send Me Someone to Love." He has written books about music, such as "Amos Garrett—Stringbending: A Master Class".

Saturday Night Blues is a compilation album of recordings by Canadian blues performers, released by Stony Plain Records and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1991. Subtitled "The Great Canadian Blues Project, Volume 1", the album was released as a tie-in to the CBC Radio program Saturday Night Blues, and was compiled from a mix of previously-released material, new unreleased recordings and performance tapes from the CBC Radio archives. It was one of the first significant compilations of the work of Canadian blues artists.
