The Street Art Festival in Belize City, commonly known by locals as "Street Fest", is an annual arts festival that occurs particularly on Albert Street in Belize City and typically happens in late February. It is a nationwide event where a variety of entertainers all unify to showcase performances, visual arts, street arts and other creative art forms. [1] The event is annually sponsored by the Institute of Creative arts and the Belize City Council whereas the organizer of the event is Karen Vernon. [2] The goal of the street art festival is to generally provide a national arena for artists to showcase their finished pieces. [3] Over the past years the festival has gained recognition and momentum due to its features such as: artwork pieces, handmade items and accessories, different foods, pastries, also tattoo booths and children's corner. Belize City is the largest city in Belize. It was once the capital of the former British Honduras. According to the 2010 census, Belize City has a population of 61,461 people. It is at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, which is a distributary of the Belize River. The Belize River empties into the Caribbean Sea eight kilometres from Belize City on the Philip Goldson Highway on the coast of the Caribbean. The city is the country's principal port and its financial and industrial hub. Cruise ships drop anchor outside the port and are tendered by local citizens. The city was almost entirely destroyed in October 1961 when Hurricane Hattie swept ashore. It was the capital of British Honduras until the government was moved to the new capital of Belmopan in 1970.
