The Streissguth Gardens are a family-maintained hillside garden covering approximately one acre on the northwest side of Capitol Hill in Seattle, Washington.
The Streissguth Gardens have grown incrementally over the years, beginning with Daniel Streissguth’s purchase of the north lot by the Blaine steps in 1962. In 1965, Ann Roth Pytkowicz moved into the adjacent house at 1806 Broadway East and began cultivating a garden there. The two gardens were joined when Daniel and Ann married in 1968, and the combined gardens form the basis for the larger family garden that exists today. [1]
In 1972, two years after Ben was born, the family purchased the hillside lots south of the Blaine steps. The first path was cleared in order to admire a native trillium discovered blooming among the weeds in the middle of the hillside. Further paths were developed to allow better access for planting and maintenance as more of the hillside was cultivated, and Ben and his friends, as well as other neighbors, began enjoying the growing network of trails. The oldest trail was named the Woodland Path, followed by the High Path, the Rock Wall Path, and the Raccoon Pool Path. Over time, the tree canopy has been thinned to allow for better views of Lake Union from the various paths and higher points in the garden. [2]
From north to south, the gardens are divided into four main sections, beginning with the perennial/shrub section that borders the public steps and walkway on East Blaine Street. Second is the central section, extending from the hillside trails to the east to the edge of Broadway East, to the west. This main section includes perennials and fruit-bearing shrub plantings, as well as berries and vegetable beds. Third, the Rust Garden, which has the best soil and sunlight, has been cultivated for perennials. Finally, the transition zone between the developed gardens and the St. Mark's Greenbelt is experiencing a blurring of boundaries to facilitate better public access and enjoyment of the gardens. [2]
The garden was first threatened with encroaching construction in the late 1970s, when the wooded lots at the south end of Broadway East were proved viable for a condo development project. The neighborhood rallied together and succeeded in protecting the lots. When in 1989 the city of Seattle passed a bond to purchase and preserve undeveloped green space, the neighborhood nominated the garden’s south lots for purchase. After negotiations with the city, this was finally achieved in 1996 and the south lots of the Streissguth Gardens became public land, and part of the St. Mark's Greenbelt. [2]
In 2006, the Streissguth family began a volunteer program for the garden. In 2008, dedicated volunteer workers contributed a total of 157 hours toward beautification and maintenance. [3]

It extends more than 20 miles (32 km) beginning at Lucky Peak Dam in the east to a short distance beyond Eagle Road in the west in Eagle, Idaho. Taking into account both sides of the river and other parallel trails and spurs, the total Greenbelt trail system measures more than 30 miles (48 km).

Saint Edward State Park is a 326-acre (132 ha)-park in Kenmore, Washington and Kirkland, Washington. It is part of the Washington State Park System. Before becoming a Catholic seminary and later a state park, the area was logged in the 19th century and again in the 1920s. A series of trails runs through the park for bicyclists and hikers. The forest canopy is primarily made up of the Coast Douglas-fir, western redcedar, bigleaf maple, Pacific madrone and western hemlock. Its dense carpet includes many varieties of fern, shrub and moss. It is flanked on the west by an undeveloped beach on Lake Washington. The park surrounds the Saint Thomas Center, which houses Bastyr University.
Bellevue Botanical Garden is a botanical garden east of downtown Bellevue, Washington on Main Street. Established in 1992, many different organizations work to maintain the garden to keep it free of charge. What began as a 7-acre gift to the city in the early 1980s has now become a 53-acre public park with multiple gardens. This includes the Fuchsia Garden, Lost Meadow Trail, Native Discovery Garden, Perennial Border, Rhododendron Glen, The Urban Meadow, Waterwise Garden, Yao Garden, and Dahlia Display.
The Capital Area Greenbelt is a looping trail located in the area of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This 20-mile loop around Pennsylvania's capital city provides visitors and tourists with opportunities to hike, ride bicycles, skate, jog, fish, walk their dogs, spot rare birds, learn about history, enjoy native flora and fauna, and appreciate nature. While parts of the trail are shared with roads, most of the loop is a dedicated path. The Trail, as it is commonly referred to by locals, passes along the Susquehanna River through Reservoir Park, Riverfront Park, Five Senses Garden, and Wildwood Park and Nature Center. In addition to parks, the Capital Area Greenbelt passes alongside attractions including the grave site of John Harris Sr., the Governor's Mansion, Fort Hunter, Harrisburg State Hospital, and the National Civil War Museum.
The Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin, Texas is managed by the City of Austin's Park and Recreation Department. The Greenbelt is a 7.25-mile (11.67 km) stretch of public land commonly referred to as "The Hill of Life".
