Sudesh Kumar is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Kerala,belonging to the 1987 batch. He served in various significant roles during his career,including as the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services and the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. [1] He retired in late 2022 after a 35-year tenure. [2]
He was born into a Ravidassia family in a village named Simbli in Nawanshahr. He completed his initial studies at the village government school. [3]
Throughout his career,DGP Sudesh Kumar held several prominent positions in Kerala Police and public administration. He served as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Prisons and as the Director of the Kerala Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau,overseeing prisons administration,anti-corruption law enforcement and anti-corruption initiatives across the state. During his appointment as Director of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau,he ordered a probe against MP and Congress state president K. Sudhakaran for misappropriation of funds mobilised by the party. [4] Before ascending to the role of DGP,he was appointed Additional Director General of Police for the North Zone,Kerala Police,following his central deputation as Inspector General of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Shillong. [5] Additionally,he served as the State Transport Commissioner,managing the state’s transportation policies and regulatory framework and heading Kerala Motor Vehicles Department. [6]
He also served as Police Commissioner of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from November 2007 to December 2009. [7] [8]
During his tenure,Sudesh Kumar was involved in multiple controversies that drew significant public and governmental scrutiny. One major allegation was that he used his position to obtain an extremely large discount 95% on a gold necklace from a jewellery shop,allegedly after threatening the staff. [9] He was also accused of undertaking a series of foreign trips (some sources say 16 consecutive trips) including a trip to China with his family,which was reportedly sponsored by a businessman who was also a complainant in another legal case,raising questions about conflict of interest and propriety. [10] Other accusations include misuse of power during his service as Transport Commissioner,allegedly taking bribes related to appointments and transfers,with claims that funds were deposited in his son’s account abroad. [11]
In addition,an incident involving his daughter drew considerable controversy in 2018,she was accused of assaulting the official police driver,Gavaskar. Both involved verbal abuse and physical assault were alleged,leading to investigations,his removal from certain positions,and a delayed filing of charges. [12] [13]
He received the President's Police Medal for distinguished service on Indian Independence Day 2013 for his long and distinguished service towards the community. [14] [15]
