Suhartoyo (born 15 October 1959) is currently the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia,a position that he has held since November 2023. [1] He ascended to the leadership of the Court following the demotion of Anwar Usman after the Court's Honorary Council found that he had committed ethical violations,which cleared the way for President Joko Widodo’s eldest son to run for vice president in 2024. Alongside I Dewa Gede Palguna,Suhartoyo was chosen by President Joko Widodo to replace outgoing Justice Ahmad Fadlil Sumadi in January 2015. [4] A former judge from the Denpasar High Court,Suhartoyo's appointment caused controversy due to criticism from the Judicial Commission of Indonesia over his lenience on a Bank Indonesia liquidity scandal when he was serving on the South Jakarta District Court. Suhartoyo joined the majority of the Court in ruling that parts of the 2010 Clemency Law were unconstitutional. Specifically,Suhartoyo explained the Court's view that the law's attempt to limit clemency appeals to within only one year of conviction conflicted with the Constitution of Indonesia and thus invalidated said parts of the law in question. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia is the independent judicial arm of the state. It maintains a system of courts and sits above the other courts and is the final court of appeal. It can also re-examine cases if new evidence emerges.
The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia is one of the apex courts in Indonesia along with the Indonesian Supreme Court. Its primary role is reviewing the constitutionality of Acts (undang-undang). It also has other functions,including resolving disputes over the powers of state institutions,settling disputes over the results of general elections,deciding on the dissolution of political parties,and supervising impeachment. The last two functions have never been exercised by the Court.
The Judicial Commission of Indonesia was established as a consequence of the third amendment to the Constitution of Indonesia ratified by the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly on 9 November 2001. In November 2024,the Indonesian government announced that Veloso would be transferred home to the Philippines after an agreement was reached between the two countries on prisoner transfer laws. Her case,among others,aroused international attention and widespread scrutiny of Indonesia's capital punishment and drug prohibition laws.

Anwar Usman is an Indonesian judge and jurist who was the sixth Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. He was elected to the position on 2 April 2018,replacing Arief Hidayat. He previously served as the fifth Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. Usman served on the Constitutional Court for four years prior to his confirmation as Deputy Chief Justice. Before replacing Arsyad Sanusi as a sitting justice on the court in April 2011,Usman was a high court judge in Jakarta,as well as the manager of human resources at the Supreme Court of Indonesia.
Mohammad Laica Marzuki is a former judge of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia,as well as the first Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. During his tenure,Marzuki was one of three of the Constitutional Court's nine members to dissent from the majority opinion that rejected the appeal of Bali Nine members Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan. This follows Marzuki's view that the death penalty in general does not deter criminals and violates the Constitution of Indonesia. Marzuki has also expressed the view that the actions of the Attorney General of Indonesia must be subordinate to the decisions of the Constitutional Court,and that actions which conflict with such decisions are illegal under the law of Indonesia.
I Dewa Gede Palguna is a constitutional law academic who served two terms as a justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. He holds the record for having been the youngest ever justice of the Indonesian Constitutional Court. In February 2020,he was appointed to the ethics council of Indonesia's Child Protection Commission.
Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly is the former Minister of Law and Human Rights of Indonesia,serving from 2019 to 2024. November 2016 Jakarta protests refer to an Islamist mass protest which took place on 4 November 2016 in Jakarta,Indonesia. It was attended by an estimated 50,000–200,000 protesters,and was aimed against the Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama,for alleged blasphemy of the Quran,the Islamic holy book. A counter-protest led by government officials and social activists in support of interfaith unity was led on 30 November.
