Sujata Saunik (born 15 June 1965) is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service officer and the Chief Secretary of the Government of Maharashtra. Saunik was the Additional Chief Secretary of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Maharashtra) and was also the Principal Secretary of Public Health and Financial Reform in the state of Maharashtra. Between 2000 and 2006,Saunik worked at the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo. [4]
She is the first woman to be appointed to the post of Chief Secretary in Maharashtra Government. [5] In August 2024,there were reports that she was being forced out of the post. [6]
Maharashtra is a state in the western peninsular region of India occupying a substantial portion of the Deccan Plateau. The 2013 drought in Maharashtra in India came after the region received lower rainfall during the monsoon season June to September 2012. It is considered as the region's worst drought in 40 years. The worst-hit areas in Maharashtra were Solapur,Parbhani,Ahmednagar,Latur,Pune,Satara,Beed and Nashik. Residents of Latur,Osmanabad,Nanded,Aurangabad,Jalna,Jalgaon and Dhule districts were also affected by this famine.
Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis is an Indian politician currently serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra since 30 June 2022,alongside Ajit Pawar. He previously held the position of Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 31 October 2014 to 12 November 2019. From 2019 to 2022,he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and was the President of BJP's Maharashtra state unit from 2013 to 2015. He became Chief Minister at the age of 44,making him the second-youngest in Maharashtra's history after Sharad Pawar. During the 2019 Maharashtra political crisis,he briefly held a second term as Chief Minister for 5 days before resigning on 28 November 2019. Fadnavis has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),He has represented the Nagpur South West constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly since 2009,having previously served Nagpur West from 1999 to 2009. Additionally,he held the position of Mayor of Nagpur from 1997 to 2001.
The Disaster Management Act,2005,No. 53 of 2005,was passed by the Rajya Sabha,the upper house of the Parliament of India on 28 November,and the Lok Sabha,the lower house of the Parliament,on 12 December 2005. It received the assent of The President of India on 23 December 2005. The Disaster Management Act,2005 has 11 chapters and 79 sections. The Act extends to the whole of India. The Act provides effective management of disasters and for matters connected there with or incidental "thereto". The main focus of this act is to provide the people who are affected with disasters,their life back and helping them.

In the wake of heavy monsoon rain and flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir,the Indian Armed Forces were deployed in increasing numbers starting 2 September 2014 to conduct search,rescue,relief,relocation,humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation missions in Jammu and Kashmir. By 18 September,over 298,514 people were rescued from the various parts of Jammu and Kashmir by the Armed forces. The Jammu and Kashmir floods,the worst in a century according to Omar Abdullah,the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,paralyzed the state government. Omar Abdullah,responding to public criticism,told the media "I had no government" in the first few days following the floods,as "My secretariat,the police headquarters,the control room,fire services,hospitals,all the infrastructure was underwater." Adding "I had no cell phone and no connectivity. I am now starting to track down ministers and officers." The Jammu and Kashmir floods of 2014 have been blamed on heavy rainfall,about 8 inches (200mm) on 4 September alone,on climate change,unplanned and uncontrolled development,encroachment of river banks,lakes,ponds,and massive loss of wet lands,absence of local government flood forecasting system,and poor governance. The Armed Forces humanitarian assistance mission in response to the floods was named Mission Sahayata (assistances). Northern Command's humanitarian assistance to Civil authorities was named 'Operation Megh Rahat'. The Indian Army,Air Force,and the Navy,committed large resources to the assistance mission including over 30,000 troops,15 engineer task forces,84 Indian Air Force and Army Aviation Corps fixed wing transport aircraft and helicopters,naval commandos and rescue specialists,and Base Hospital,four field hospitals,over 106 medical detachments. "Operation Megh Rahat",ended on 19 September 2014,but "Operation Sadbhavna",the relief and medical assistance support,according to government press release,will continue in "close synergy with the civil administration and the police".
K. Padmanabhaiah is a retired Indian civil servant and a former Home Secretary of India. He is the chairman of the Court of Governors of the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI),and has headed many government committees such as the Committee on Police Reforms (2000),the Committee on Reorganization of the Services Selection Board,and the committee to Review the working of National Institute of Urban Management. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 2008,for his contributions to Indian civil service.

Murali Sastry is an Indian material chemist,nanomaterial scientist and the chief executive officer of the IITB-Monash Research Academy. He is a former chief scientist at Tata Chemicals and a former senior scientist at the National Chemical Laboratory. He is known for his studies on surfaces,films and materials chemistry and is an elected fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 2002,for his contributions to chemical sciences.
Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is an Indian police officer who served as the director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He is a 1985 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and former Director General of Police,Maharashtra. He was previously the police commissioner of Mumbai,the largest city in India and the seventh most populous city in the world. Jaiswal was with the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW),India's external intelligence agency for nine years,during which he served as the additional secretary of R&AW for three years. Jaiswal has also served in Intelligence Bureau and Maharashtra ATS Chief. He was the head of the Central Industrial Security Force. Jaiswal's career began in 1985 as a trainee officer in Aurangabad,where he was subsequently assigned the full posting as the Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Praveensingh Pratapsingh Pardeshi is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1985 batch with over 36 years of experience in the services,and former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai. Pardeshi has held various senior leadership positions within the United Nations as the Chief of Transition Recovery unit,UNDP Geneva and Senior Coordinator of United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). He has subsequently headed the regional offices Support and Co-ordination Unit of UNISDR. Pardeshi has been a key player in post-disaster and conflict recovery programs of UNDP and the public administration,governance reform,wildlife conservation and public health effort against COVID-19 in Maharashtra,India. Pardeshi was the Global Programme Coordinator for the Defeat-NCD Partnership within United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR).
Iqbal Singh Chahal is a 1989 batch IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre. He is the former Municipal Commissioner and Administrator of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and is currently an Additional Chief Secretary in the Maharashtra Chief Minister's office. Prior to this,Chahal has served Government of Maharashtra and India in various capacities. In his initial career he was collector of Thane and Chatrapati Sambhajinagar districts,later on he was Joint Secretary in Ministry of Home Affairs,Ministry of Women &Child Development and Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Following that he was also Principal Secretary in Water Resources Department and Urban Development Department of Maharashtra.
