The Sun Alliance (French : Alliance Soleil, AS) is a political alliance in Benin. Its current president is Sacca Lafia.

History

The AS was established on 21 December 2014 as an alliance of the Union for Democracy and National Solidarity (UDSN), the Union for Relief (UPR) and Hope Force (FE), three parties based in the north of Benin. [1] The UPR and FE had contested the 2011 parliamentary elections together, winning two seats. [2]

In the April 2015 parliamentary elections, the AS received 6.7% of the vote; the party won four seats.

Parliamentary elections were held in Mauritania on 23 November. The opposition has vowed to boycott the election unless the president steps down beforehand. A total of 1,096 candidates have registered to compete for the leadership of 218 local councils across Mauritania, whilst 438 candidates are contesting for the 146 parliamentary seats. Some 1.2 million Mauritanians were eligible to vote in the election. The first round results yielded a landslide victory for the ruling UPR winning 56 seats and their 14 coalition partners winning 34 seats. The Islamist Tewassoul party won 12 seats. The remaining seats were contested in a runoff on 21 December 2013. The UPR won the majority with 75 seats in the Assembly.

Union Makes the Nation is an alliance of opposition political parties in Benin. It is composed of the MADEP, PSD, RB, Key Force, MDS, UNDP, MARCHE, PDPS and RDL VIVOTEN, and therefore represents an expansion of the Alliance for a Democratic Dynamic to embrace most of the significant Beninese parties opposed to the government of President Yayi Boni. The Union contested the 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections. Their presidential candidate, Adrien Houngbédji, was credited with 35.7% of the vote; he issued a statement rejecting the validity of the election results. In the parliamentary elections, the Union took 30 seats out of 83 to become by far the largest opposition party.

Parliamentary elections were held in Benin on 8 January 2023 to elect all 109 members of the National Assembly. The preliminary results of the election were announced on 11 January. The result was a victory for parties supportive of President Patrice Talon, the Progressive Union and Republican Bloc, which together won 81 of the 109 seats.
