Sun Hur is a South Korean-born scientist. She is an Oscar M. Schloss Professor at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital and an investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Hur was born and raised in Seoul,South Korea to an engineering father and chemist-trained mother. She was admitted to Seoul National University and Ewha Womans University at the same time,but chose Ewha Womans University due to the passionate recruitment offer. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree from Ewha Womans University before moving to the United States in 2000 to conduct research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and participate in an exchange program at the University of California,Santa Barbara. [1] Hur completed her PhD in physical chemistry in 2003 under the guidance of Thomas Bruice and then obtained post-doctoral training in X-ray crystallography at the University of California,San Francisco with Robert M. Stroud. [2] While conducting her post-doctoral fellowship in experimental enzymology,Hur contributed to research on the mechanism by which a protein-synthesizing enzyme catalyzes reactions. [3]
Following her post-doctoral training,Hur joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School (HMS) in 2008 as an assistant professor and Boston Children's Hospital in 2010. [2] As an assistant professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology,Hur focused her research on how the immune system detects viruses,specifically RNAs. [4] In her own laboratory,Hur's research on a family of viral RNA receptors led to the discovery of key mechanistic principles of foreign nucleic acid sensing. [2] In 2010,she was one of three HMS professors named Pew Scholars in the biomedical sciences by the Pew Charitable Trusts. [4] Using funds from the Pew Scholarship,Hur and a post-doctoral fellow showed that ubiquitin helps the protein RIG-I gather into stable rings. This provided a structural rationale for how ubiquitin is vital for RIG-I and how that might help keep the immune system stable. [5]
In 2015,Hur received the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science as a young foreign-born biomedical scientist who has demonstrated significant early achievement in basic,applied or translational biomedical science. She was specifically recognized for her research into the immune system,particularly "disease-causing viruses that generate a double-stranded RNA during replication." [6] Hur stated that she planned on using the funding from the prize to "develop medicines to prevent miscommunication in the immune system as well as strategies to use the immune system to combat certain cancers." [7] As a result of her biomedical research,Hur received one of the National Institutes of Health's 2019 Director's Pioneer Award. [8] In the same year,she was also promoted to the rank of Full professor in Harvard's Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. [9] The following year,Hur was named a 2020 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in Life Sciences finalist. [10] She was also appointed to sit on the scientific advisory board for Silicon Therapeutics. [11]
Prior to the start of the 2021–22 academic year,Hur was one of four HMS faculty members appointed Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators. [12] In November 2021,Hur was one of the three inaugural winners of the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research as a scientist under the age of 50 who is "making significant contributions to the understanding of cancer or are improving the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research." [13] She was also the 2022 recipient of the Protein Society Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Award,which recognizes scientists who were influential in expanding societies understanding of proteins. [14]
Pamela Jane Bjorkman NAS,AAAS is an American biochemist and molecular biologist. She is the David Baltimore Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Her research centers on the study of the three-dimensional structures of proteins related to Class I MHC,or Major Histocompatibility Complex,proteins of the immune system,and proteins involved in the immune responses to viruses. Bjorkman's goal is to improve current therapeutic applications. Bjorkman is most well known as a pioneer in the field of structural biology.
Joan Elaine Argetsinger Steitz is Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She is known for her discoveries involving RNA,including ground-breaking insights into how ribosomes interact with messenger RNA by complementary base pairing and that introns are spliced by small nuclear ribonucleic proteins (snRNPs),which occur in eukaryotes. In September 2018,Steitz won the Lasker-Koshland Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science. The Lasker award is often referred to as the 'American Nobel' because 87 of the former recipients have gone on to win Nobel prizes.

Xiaowei Zhuang is a Chinese-American biophysicist who is the David B. Arnold Jr. Professor of Science,Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology,and Professor of Physics at Harvard University,and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She is best known for her work in the development of Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM),a super-resolution fluorescence microscopy method,and the discoveries of novel cellular structures using STORM. She received a 2019 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing super-resolution imaging techniques that get past the diffraction limits of traditional light microscopes,allowing scientists to visualize small structures within living cells. Shruti Naik is an Indian American scientist who is an associate professor of biological sciences at the NYU Langone Medical Center. In 2020 Naik was named a Packard Fellow for her research into the molecular mechanisms that underpin the function of tissue stem cells. She was awarded the 2018 regional Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists and the International Takeda Innovator in Regeneration Award. She has also received the NIH Directors Innovator Award and been named a Pew Stewart Scholar in 2020.
Cigall Kadoch is an American biochemist and cancer biologist who is Associate Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her research is focused in chromatin regulation and how changes in cellular structure can lead to human diseases,such as Cancer,Neurodevelopmental disorders,and others. She is internationally recognized for her work on the mammalian SWI/SNF complex,a large molecular machine known as a Chromatin remodeling complex. She was named as one of the world's leading scientists by MIT Technology Review,35 Under 35 and Forbes 30 Under 30, and a Finalist for the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. In 2019,she received the Martin and Rose Wachtel Cancer Research Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 2020,the American Association for Cancer Research Outstanding Achievement in Basic Cancer Research Award. Kadoch was also recognized as one of the 100 Influential Women in Oncology by OncoDaily.
