Sunil Subramaniam (born 28 May 1967) is a former Indian first-class cricketer and the current head coach of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Academy and manager of the Indian national team. [1] During his playing career,Subramaniam represented Tamil Nadu cricket team and Assam cricket team. He took up the job of cricket coaching in 2005.
Subramaniam is a former slow left-arm orthodox spinner who played for Tamil Nadu cricket team for ten seasons from 1988/89 to 1997/98 before getting dropped from the team. He then played one season for Assam cricket team in 2000/01. [2] Despite having a successful first-class career,he was never considered for India selection. He appeared for Rest of India in 1994/95 Irani Trophy against Mumbai. [3]
During his playing career,Subramaniam also worked for the Indian IT company HCL Technologies. [4]
Subramaniam retired from competitive cricket in 2001 at the age of 34. He made the retirement call after tearing a ligament in his left leg during practice following which he underwent two operations. [3] He had two simultaneous injuries at the time of retirement,with blades inserted into both his legs. [4] He was regarded to be among "the most feared bowlers in first class cricket" for his bowling skills and aggressive approach. [3]
In 2005,he became the coach of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Academy. He has been the coach of Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin since Ashwin's under-19 days at Tamil Nadu. [5]
Off spin is a type of spin bowling in cricket. A bowler who uses this technique is called an off spinner. Off spinners bowl with their right-arm and a finger spin action. Their normal delivery is called an off break,which spins from left to right when the ball bounces on the pitch. For a right-handed batsman,the ball breaks towards them from the off side,hence the name 'off break'.
Anil Kumble is an Indian former cricket player,coach and commentator who played Test and One Day International cricket for his national team over an international career of 18 years. Widely regarded as one of the best leg spinners and one of the greatest bowlers in Test Cricket History,he took 619 wickets in Test cricket and was the third highest wicket taker of all time at the time of his retirement in 2008. In 1999 while playing against Pakistan,Kumble dismissed all ten batsmen in a Test match innings,joining England's Jim Laker as the second player to achieve the feat. Unlike his contemporaries,Kumble was not a big turner of the ball,but relied primarily on pace,bounce,and accuracy. He was nicknamed "Apple" and "Jumbo". Kumble was selected as the Cricketer of the Year in 1993 Indian Cricket,and one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year three years later. Kumble was a member of the Indian team that was one of the joint-winners of the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy,which the title was also shared with Sri Lanka.
Sunil Bandacharya Joshi is an Indian former cricketer and former selector of the India cricket team. He played as an all-rounder who bowled slow left arm spin and batted left-handed. Sunil Joshi was appointed as chief selector of the senior men's cricket team on 4 March 2020. He was a part of the squad which finished as runners-up at the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy.
Robin Singh is an Indian former cricketer and cricket coach. He represented India in one Test and 136 ODIs between 1989 and 2001 as an all-rounder. He has coached the Indian Premier League's Mumbai Indians since 2010 and the Caribbean Premier League's Barbados Tridents since 2013. He has also coached the Deccan Chargers in the IPL's inaugural year. As a player,he was known for his calmness and ability to perform under pressure. He brought to Indian cricket world class fielding. He was a part of the squad which finished as runners-up at the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy.
Laxman Sivaramakrishnan,popularly known as "Siva" and LS,is a former Indian cricketer and current cricket commentator. During his playing career,he was a right-arm leg-spinner. Sivaramakrishnan began his commentary career in a test match between India and Bangladesh on November 12 November 2000. He also serves as one of the players' representatives on the International Cricket Council's cricket committee. He was also a part of the Indian squad which won the 1985 World Championship of Cricket.
Margashayam Venkataramana is a former Indian cricketer. He was a right arm off-spinner,who played for Tamil Nadu in first class cricket. He made his debut in the 1987–88 Ranji Trophy season and took 35 wickets including a career best 7 for 94 in the final against Railways. Another 30 wickets in 1988–89 season earned him a place in the Indian one-day squad against the touring New Zealand national cricket team. He played his only match at Vadodara and picked up 2 wickets. Venkataramana's only test match was against West Indies cricket team at Jamaica in 1988–89. He went wicket-less in the first innings and dismissed Desmond Haynes for his only Test wicket. Venkataramana first player in the world to get his first wicket as stumping in both Test and ODI.
Sadagoppan Ramesh is a former Indian international cricketer. He is a left-handed opening batter and an occasional right-arm off break bowler. He had represented the Indian cricket team while also representing Tamil Nadu and South zone in domestic cricket. In September 1999,he became the first Indian cricketer to take a wicket off his first ball in ODI cricket. He later became an actor post his cricketing career appearing in Tamil films.
Sridharan Sriram is an Indian cricket coach and former cricketer. He is a left-handed batsman and a left-arm orthodox spin bowler. He played in the Indian Cricket League and the Indian Premier League. He was a part of the squad which finished as runners-up at the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy. On 19 August 2022,he was appointed as the technical consultant (T20I) of the Bangladesh national cricket team till the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Woorkeri Venkat Raman is a former Indian cricketer and former coach of the India women's national cricket team,having been appointed to the role in December 2018. Raman was replaced by Ramesh Powar in May 2021 as the national woman's team coach. He played domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu,mainly as a left-handed batsman and a part-time left arm spinner. He was a part of the Indian squad which won the 1990-91 Asia Cup.
Subramaniam Badrinath is a former Indian international cricketer. He is a right-handed middle order batter and an occasional right-arm off break bowler. He had represented the Indian cricket team and was named in the 30 man provisional squad for the 2007 Cricket World Cup but did not make it to the final squad. He has played for Tamil Nadu,Vidarbha,Hyderabad and South zone in domestic cricket. He has also played for Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has also represented the Indian Board President's XI on several occasions.
Abhinav Mukund is an Indian Former cricketer who plays domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu. He has played for India in seven Test matches. He has captained Tamil Nadu and India A on several occasions. He was a member of Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
Ravichandran Ashwin,known as Ravi Ashwin,is a former Indian international cricketer. He played as a right-arm off spin bowler and a handy lower order batsman. He represented the national team and was a part of the team that won the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy,where in the 2013 final,he bowled the match-winning over. He plays for Tamil Nadu and South Zone in domestic cricket and for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. On 18 December 2024,he announced retirement from all formats of international cricket.
Krishnakumar Dinesh Karthik is an Indian commentator and former professional cricketer and coach who played for the India national cricket team and is currently the batting coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. He was also the captain of the Tamil Nadu cricket team in domestic cricket. He made his debut for the Indian cricket team in 2004. He was the 4th Indian batsman to play 300 T20 matches. Karthik was a member of the team that won both the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Karthik is also the first Indian ever to win a Player of The Match award in a T20 International,having done so in 2006. Known for his six hitting ability,aggressive batting style,longevity and ability to finish games strong,Karthik was viewed as a crucial asset in the IPL and the India national cricket team for almost two decades.
