Sunrisers Eastern Cape is a South African professional Twenty20 franchise cricket team that first competed in the inaugural season of SA20 tournament. [1] The team is based in Gqeberha, South Africa, and was formed in 2022. The team's home-ground is the St George's Park Cricket Ground. The team is coached by Adrian Birrell. They were the champions of the first season of the tournament after they beat Pretoria Capitals by 4 wickets in the final at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.
In August 2022, the Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the establishment of the SA20, a Twenty20 Cricket competition to be started in 2023. The teams for the competition, representing 6 different cities of South Africa, including Eastern Cape, were put up on auction in South Africa in September 2022. The Eastern Cape franchise was purchased was revealed that Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Sun Group will be owning a team in the league. The team unveiled their logo and jersey in January 2023, through their social media handles. [6]
They were the champions of the first season of the tournament after they beat Pretoria Capitals by 4 wickets in the final at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Having successfully lead the team to their inaugural SA20 title, Markram was later appointed as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2023 season of the IPL. [7]
The Sunrisers defended their title to become champions for a second time. They beat Durban's Super Giants by 89 runs in the final at Cape Town. [8]

Juan "Rusty" Theron is a South African-American professional cricketer. He played for the Warriors cricket team in South African domestic cricket and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League and for the South Africa national team. He is a right-arm fast bowler and bats right-handed. He retired from South African domestic cricket on 8 October 2015, following a spate of knee injuries. In 2019, he qualified to represent the United States cricket team in international matches, after fulfilling the International Cricket Council's three-year residency rule. He represented the United States in a One Day International (ODI) match in September 2019. He is known as "Rusty," due to the reddish-brown color of his hair.
Dané van Niekerk is a South African cricketer born in Pretoria and educated at Hoërskool Centurion. A right-handed batter and leg break bowler, she played for South Africa in Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODI) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) between 2009 and 2021, and was captain of the side between 2016 and 2021. She was the first bowler for South Africa to take 100 wickets in WODIs. On 16 March 2023, she announced her retirement from international cricket.

Aiden Kyle Markram is a South African cricketer who is the current captain of the South Africa national cricket team in Twenty20 International cricket and former captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. Markram had captained the South African under-19 cricket team to win the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In the 2018 South African Cricket Annual, he was named as one of the five “Cricketers of the Year”. Markram was described by former captain and batsman Graeme Smith as a future South Africa captain.
