Deshamanya Suppiah Sharvananda (also spelt Suppiah Sarvananda) was the 37th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and the first Governor of the Western Province.

Early life

Sharvanda was born on 22 February 1923 in Kayts, Jaffna District. He attended St. Anthony's English School in Kayts before transferring to Jaffna Hindu College at Grade 6. After completing his secondary education he studied at Colombo Law College, qualifying as a lawyer in 1946. During his time at the Law College he also obtained a BA degree from the University of London.

As a lawyer Sharvanda worked on civil cases and served under such eminent lawyers as Dr. H. W. Thambiah QC, S. J. V. Chelvanayakam QC, and H. V. Perera QC. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1974. In 1984 he succeeded Neville Samarakoon as Chief Justice, the first Tamil to hold that position. He made a number of landmark judgments during his Supreme Court tenure, including the 13th Amendment to the constitution. He retired from the Supreme Court in 1988.

Later life

After his retirement President J.R Jayewardene appointed him the first governor of the Western Province in 1988. He held this position until 1994. In 2001 President Chandrika Kumaratunga appointed him as the Chairman of the Presidential Truth Commission on ethnic violence between the period of 1981 and 1984.

Sri Lanka Law College

Sri Lanka Law College is a Law College on Hulftsdorp Street in Colombo, Sri Lanka, established in 1874 under the then-one-year-old Council of Legal Education in order to impart a formal legal education to those who wished to become advocates and proctors in Ceylon. Being the first Law Faculty in the country, and the oldest Faculty of Law in the entire University system of the country it conducts both undergraduate and post-graduate degree programs in the field law.

Justice Chellappah Nagalingam, KC was a leading Ceylonese judge and lawyer. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ceylon and served as acting Governor-General of Ceylon in 1954. Henry Thambiah

Deshamanya Justice Henry Wijeyakone Thambiah (1906–1997) was a Ceylonese academic, diplomat, lawyer and judge, born in Sri Lanka during British colonial rule. He was a Commissioner of Assize, High Commissioner and judge of the Supreme Courts of Ceylon and Sierra Leone.

C. V. Vigneswaran

Canagasabapathy Visuvalingam Vigneswaran, PC is a Sri Lankan Tamil lawyer, judge, politician and Member of Parliament. After practising law for more than 15 years, Vigneswaran was a member of the judiciary for 25 years. He was a magistrate and a judge of the District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. He was Chief Minister of the Northern Province from October 2013 to October 2018. He was elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in August 2020. Vigneswaran is leader of the Tamil People's Alliance and the Tamil People's National Alliance.

Justice Krishnapillai Palakidnar was a leading Sri Lankan lawyer, judge and President of the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka.

Justice Namasivayam Nadarajah was a Ceylon Tamil lawyer and judge of the Supreme Court of Ceylon.

The Government of the Northern Province refers to the provincial government of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Under the Sri Lankan constitution the nine provincial governments of the country have power over a variety of matters including agriculture, education, health, housing, local government, planning, road transport and social services. The constitution also gives them powers over police and land but successive central governments have refused to devolve these powers to the provinces. Deshamanya Justice Victor Tennekoon QC was a Sri Lankan lawyer and jurist. He served as the 35th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, as well as the 33rd Attorney General and 23rd Solicitor General. From 1979 to 1984 Tennekoon served as Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.

Raja Sirimevan Wanasundera PC was a Sri Lankan judge who served as a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court and the 27th Solicitor General of Sri Lanka.
