Suraj (born Suresh; December 31, 1977) is an Indian film director who works primarily in Tamil films. He is best known for directing action and masala films. [3]

Career

In 1996, Suraj began working as an assistant director to Sundar C on his comedy films Ullathai Allitha and Mettukudi . In 1997, he continued to assist Sundar C on Arunachalam starring Rajinikanth and he was the co-director of the film Janakiraman . [4] He then made Kunguma Pottu Gounder and Military under the name Sai Suresh. [5]

Then, Suraj returned to assist Sundar C in his films. In 2006, he made his directorial comeback through Thalai Nagaram , starring his mentor Sundar C, Jyothirmayi and Vadivelu. The following year, Suraj made his third film Marudhamalai , featured Arjun, Nila and again comedian Vadivelu. In 2009, he directed Padikathavan starring Dhanush, Tamannaah and due his busy schedule, Vadivelu has been replaced by comedian Vivek. The film was distributed by Sun Pictures. In 2011, he made Mappillai , remake of the 1989 film Mappillai . The film starring Dhanush, Hansika Motwani and Manisha Koirala. [6] The film received mixed reviews, but the film became a hit at the box office. [7]

After Mappillai Suraj directed Alex Pandian starring Karthi and Anushka Shetty. The film released on 11 January 2013. After Alex Pandian's failure, Suraj directed Sakalakala Vallavan starring Jayam Ravi, Anjali and Trisha. The film released on 31 July 2015. [8] He later directed Kaththi Sandai starring Vishal. [9]

In 2022, Suraj directed Naai Sekar Returns , to Vadivelu’s character in Thalai Nagaram (2006) in which he plays a laughably over-the-top rowdy called Naai Sekar. [10]

Padikkadavan (transl. Illiterate) is a 2009 Indian Tamil-language masala film written and directed by Suraj and produced by B. Venkatarama Reddy. It stars Dhanush and Tamannaah Bhatia alongside an ensemble supporting cast including Vivek, Atul Kulkarni, Suman, and Sayaji Shinde. The music was composed by Mani Sharma with cinematography by A. Venkatesh and editing by Manoj. Filming began on 5th April 2008, with an inaugural pooja, and the movie was finally released on 14 January 2009 during Pongal festival and received a huge positive response. The film was successful, grossing 15 crore in Tamil Nadu and established Dhanush as one of the top five bankable heroes of Tamil cinema after then.

Nagaram Marupakkam also known simply as Nagaram is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film directed by Sundar C, who plays the lead role and also co-wrote and co-produced the film. Co-produced by his wife Khushbu, the film also stars Anuya Bhagvath and Vadivelu in pivotal roles and features music by Thaman. Sundar's first directorial after four years, Nagaram released on 19 November 2010, it is based on the 1993 American film Carlito's Way. The film is very well known for comedy sequences and portrayal of the comic character "Style Pandi" by Vadivelu.

Thalapathy Dinesh is an Indian action choreographer who works mainly in Tamil cinema. He started his career in the cinema as an extra fighter in Naan Sigappu Manithan, and later he became a stunt master and actor. Stunt masters like Stun Siva, Peter Hein, Anal Arasu, Rajasekhar, Hari Dinesh, Pradeep Dinesh, Supreme Sundar, Vicky, and Theeppori Nithya have worked as fighters and assistants to him. Sakalakala Vallavan previously known as Appatakkar (transl. Know-it-all) is a 2015 Tamil-language comedy film written and directed by Suraj. The film stars Ravi Mohan, Trisha and Anjali, while Prabhu and Soori appear in supporting roles and Vivek in a guest appearance. S. Thaman composed the film's music, while cinematography was by U. K. Senthil Kumar and editing by Selva RK. The film was released on 31 July 2015 to panning reviews and fared extremely poor at the box office.

Kedheeswaran, better known as Bonda Mani, was an Indian actor who appeared in Tamil language films. He came to Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka as a refugee.

Naai Sekar Returns is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language comedy film produced by Subaskaran Allirajah and written and directed by Suraj. The film stars Vadivelu in his comeback film after five years, while Anandaraj, Rao Ramesh, and Redin Kingsley play supporting roles. The film's music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan. The film is a spin-off of Vadivelu's character in Suraj's film Thalai Nagaram (2006). The film was released theatrically on 9 December 2022 to mostly negative reviews from critics.

Vengal Rao is an Indian Tamil actor and comedian who predominantly featured in comedy roles. For the major part of his acting career, he shared screenspace with fellow veteran comedian actor Vadivelu in many film comedy sequences.
