Surau Al-Firdaus is a surau located in Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last surviving village in Singapore. Built in 1967, it actively functions as a place of prayer in the village as well as a centre for Islamic activities and religious classes.
The surau was established in the 1960s by the residents of Kampong Lorong Buangkok. [1] [2] According to the current caretaker of the surau, the place was built in 1967, with help from donations. [2] The surau was intended as a place of prayer for the Malay Muslim families living in the village. [1] [2] It was reconstructed in 1999 to accommodate more worshippers. [1]
Currently, the surau is still active and functions as a local mosque. [1] [2] [3] It is not only used by the residents of the village but also by people from the city. [1] [2] [3] The surau also hosts Islamic classes and related activities. [1] [3]
The present surau is a wooden structure with a zinc roof, as is the case with other houses in the village. [4] [5] A metal pole attached to the roof bears a crescent and star symbol. [4] The construction of the surau is generally described as being in the style of the architecture of Malaysia. [5]
