Surrey Public Library, operating as Surrey Libraries, is the municipal public library system of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Surrey Libraries serves Surrey's population of approximately 580,000 with a collection of more than 790,000 items and 188,691 active cardholders. [4]

Surrey Public Library has services and programs for patrons of all ages.

History

Prior to 1983, Surrey was a member of the Fraser Valley Regional Library. In 1982, Surrey held a referendum on the withdrawal from FVRL, which passed. On March 17, 1983, Surrey began operating as an independent municipal library. The Surrey Public Library's 10-branch network includes the Newton branch, designed by Patkau Architects, which was awarded the Governor General's Award for architecture in 1994. [5] The Semiahmoo branch, which opened in 2004, was the first LEED certified public library in Canada. [6] City Centre Library was designed by Bing Thom Architects. [7] The library is 77,000 square feet on four floors and it is a LEED certified green building. The official Grand Opening was held on September 24, 2011. [8]

The Surrey City Centre Library is the main branch of Surrey Libraries. It was opened in September 2011 and replaced the Whalley Public Library. Part of a re-vitalization project for the City Centre area, the building was designed by the late Bing Thom. The library is located northwest of Surrey Central station in the Whalley / City Centre neighbourhood.

Patkau Architects is an architecture firm based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is a full-service firm practicing in Canada and the United States. Its project scope includes, but is not limited to, gallery installations, art galleries, libraries, university buildings, urban planning and private residences. The firm has received numerous national and international architectural awards. Patkau Architects also represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2006.

Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL) is a public library system that serves the city of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties in Virginia. The library system is within Region 5 of Virginia Library Association (VLA).
