Suzanna Hext (born 11 September 1988) [1] [2] is a British Paralympic swimmer and equestrian, who won three gold medals in dressage at the 2017 FEI European Championships, and two medals at both the 2019 and 2023 World Para Swimming Championships. She finished fourth in two S5 swimming events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Hext is from Truro, Cornwall. [3] and has also lived near Sherston, Wiltshire. [4] In 2012, she was paralysed in a horse riding accident, and required the use of a wheelchair. [5] She watched the 2012 Summer Paralympics from her hospital bed. [3] [5] In November 2021, she had a cochlear implant, which allowed her to hear again. [6] In her spare time, Hext volunteers for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. [4]
In equestrian, Hext competes in the Grade III classification. [7] She won three gold medals in dressage at the 2017 FEI European Championships, [3] winning the individual, [7] team [8] and freestyle events. [9] She competed in the team event alongside Sophie Wells, Erin Orford and Julie Payne, and it was her first European Championship. [10] In 2018, she was part of the British team that won the team event at the Pole International du Cheval. [11]
Hext started swimming in 2017, [12] and has trained at Swindon swimming club, and at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. [3] As of 2024, Hext trained at the University of Bath. [13] Hext is the British record holder in S5 50 metre and 100 metre freestyle events, and in S4 100 metre backstroke. [3]
At the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships, Hext came second in the 50 metre freestyle event, and third in the 100 metre freestyle competition. [3] [14] In 2020, she decided to participate in swimming qualifying for the 2020 Summer Paralympics, rather than equestrian. [14] During the COVID-19 pandemic, she turned her parents' house into a gym, [5] and was able to use jockey AP McCoy's private pool, [3] as well as swimming in the Cornish sea. [15]
At the 2020 Summer Paralympics, Hext had an asthma attack that caused her to be hospitalised. [16] As a result, she was withdrawn from the British team for the mixed 4 × 50 metre freestyle relay 20pts. [17] She came fourth in the finals of the 200 metre freestyle S5 [18] and 100 metre freestyle S5 events. [16] After further asthma attacks, Hext withdrew from the 100m breaststroke SB4 and 50m backstroke S5 events. [19]
Hext did not compete at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships after developing sepsis whilst training in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. [20] She was included in the British squad for the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships. [21] She won the 50 metre freestyle S5 event at the World Championships, [22] and finished second in the 100 metre freestyle S5 competition. [23]
Hext was selected for the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris. [13]
Laurentia Tan Yen Yi BBM PBM, is a Singaporean para-equestrian competitor. Tan developed cerebral palsy and profound deafness after birth, and moved to the United Kingdom with her parents at the age of three. She took up horse riding aged five years as a form of physiotherapy. She subsequently completed her A-levels at the Mary Hare Grammar School, a residential special school for the deaf, and graduated with an honours degree from Oxford Brookes University in hospitality management and tourism.
Yip Pin Xiu is a Singaporean backstroke swimmer. She is a five-time Paralympic gold medallist and 5 time World Champion, with two world records in the 50 m backstroke S2 and the 100 m backstroke S2. Yip is Singapore's most decorated Paralympian.
Charlotte Susan Jane Dujardin is a British dressage rider, equestrian and writer. A multiple World and Olympic champion, Dujardin has been described as the dominant dressage rider of her era. She held the complete set of available individual elite dressage titles at one point: the individual Olympic freestyle, World freestyle and Grand Prix Special, World Cup individual dressage and European freestyle, and Grand Prix Special titles. Dujardin was the first rider to hold this complete set of titles at the same time.
Para-equestrian is an equestrian sport governed by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), and includes two competitive events: One is para-equestrian dressage, which is conducted under the same basic rules as conventional dressage, but with riders divided into different competition grades based on their functional abilities. The other is para-equestrian driving, which operates under the same basic rules as combined driving but places competitors in various grades based on their functional abilities.
Michèle George is a Paralympic equestrian of Belgium. She won two gold medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, a gold and one silver at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, and another two gold medals at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Emily Beecroft is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics,2020 Tokyo Paralympics and has been selected for 2024 Summer Paralympics. She won a silver and bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
Tully Alicia Jacqueline Kearney is a British Paralympic swimmer. Kearney competes in the S5/SB3 classification for swimmers with physical disabilities. She won Gold and Silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games setting World records in both the 50 m and 100 m freestyle. She has also won medals in four IPC Swimming World Championships winning Bronze in the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships, setting a British record; four Golds, a Silver and a Bronze in the 2015 World Championships setting three European records and becoming GB's highest medal earner of the Championships, and three Golds at the World Para Swimming Championships in 2019, setting three British records and two Championship records, repeating this in the 2022 World Championships in Madeira where she broke three World Records. Kearney also won Gold and Bronze at the World Para Swimming European Championships in 2018. Kearney is a multiple British, European and World record holder.
Susan Seipel is an Australian Para-canoeist, a gold and bronze medallist in kayak and outrigger canoe at the 2015 and 2016 World Championships. She won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Sharon Jarvis is an Australian para-equestrian. She represented Australia at the three Summer Paralympics - 2008 Beijing, 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo.
Zheng Tao is a Chinese para swimmer and five-time Paralympic champion. He is known as the "armless swimmer". He made a world record by winning 4 gold medals in Tokyo 2020 Paralympic.

Monica Boggioni is an Italian Paralympic swimmer who competes in international level events. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, winning bronze medals in the 100 metre freestyle S5, and 200 metre freestyle S5.
Toni Stephanie Shaw is a British Paralympic swimmer. In 2019 she set the world record time for the S9 200m butterfly, and was also part of the team that set a new world record for the 4 × 100 m medley relay. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics, she won a bronze medal in the women's 400 metre freestyle S9 event and later went on to win gold at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships, becoming the World Champion. She is a three-time World Champion and two-time European Champion.
Sjerstin de Vries-Vermeulen is a Dutch former swimmer and equestrian, who competed at four Paralympic Games. She won five swimming medals at the 1988 Summer Paralympics, and won equestrian medals at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Paralympics in the mixed team dressage event.
Iréne Slättengren is a Swedish former equestrian and audiologist. She won gold medals in the individual championship test grade II and individual freestyle test grade II dressage events at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens.

Mohammad Abbas Karimi is a swimmer, who came second in the S5 50 meter butterfly event at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships, making him the first refugee athlete to win a medal at that competition. He came eighth in the 50 meter butterfly S5 event for the Refugee Paralympic Team at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Georgia Wilson is a British equestrian, who won bronze in the individual championship test grade II and individual freestyle test grade II events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. She also won the individual championship grade II event at the 2019 FEI European Championships.
Marta Fernández Infante is a Spanish Paralympic swimmer from Valladolid, Spain. She has cerebral palsy. At the 2020 World Para Swimming European Open Championships, she won one gold medal and three silvers, as well as breaking a world record. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics, she won a silver medal in the 50 metre butterfly S5 event, a gold medal in the 50 metre breaststroke SB3 event, and a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle S4. She broke her own world record in the 50 metre butterfly S4.
