Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumi is a retired major general of the Bangladesh Army and former director general of Special Security Force. [1] [2]
During the Bangladesh Nationalist Party rule from 2001 to 2006,Rumi served as the director general of Special Security Force. [3] He backed the military supported caretaker government that took power during the 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis. [4] During his military service,other officers referred to him as Shada (white) Rumi to distinguish him from his contemporary Major General Sadik Hasan Rumi,who was known as Kala (black) Rumi. [5]
In January 2007,Rumi was made the general officer commanding of the 66th Infantry Division which was based in Rangpur Cantonment and Major General Sheikh Md Manirul Islam replaced him as the Director General of Special Security Force. [2] [6] He worked with Chief of Staff of Bangladesh Army,Moeen U Ahmed,to establish Rangpur University and a new political party called Jago Bangladesh. [7]
In February 2009,Rumi was made the chairman of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies a state operated think tank. [8] The Government of Bangladesh sent him and Lieutenant General Aminul Karim,commandant of the National Defence College,to forced retirement in March 2009. [3]
Iajuddin Ahmed was the President of Bangladesh,serving from 6 September 2002 until 12 February 2009. From late October 2006 to January 2007,he also served as Chief Advisor of the caretaker government. From October 2006 to early 2008,his responsibilities as president included the Defense Ministry of the caretaker government.
Hussain Muhammad Ershad was a Bangladeshi military officer and politician who served as the leader of Bangladesh from 1982 to 1990,ruling as an unelected military strongman from 1982 to 1983 and as president of Bangladesh from 1983 to 1990.
Lt. Col. Abu TaherBU was a Bangladeshi military officer and war hero. He first served in the Pakistan Army,and later defected to the Bangladesh Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He crossed into India around early August and reported to the Indian authorities. After a week screening at Dehradun,India,Taher reported to Kolkata,Bangladesh Provincial government at 8 Theatre Rd. He was ordered to report to Sector 11 of Mukti Bahini under command of Major Ziaur Rahman,he became the sector commander after him. He served in BDF from end of August to 2 November 1971. He was awarded the medal Bir Uttom for his gallantry in the liberation war. He was released from military service by Indian military medical board in Pune,India after his leg was amputated. After independence,he was inducted into the Bangladesh Army for administrative retirement with legacy rank of lieutenant colonel. After settling in with family,the government of Bangladesh appointed him with employment at Kumilla. Later Taher turned into a political activist and leader of the left-wing Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal.
Bangladesh has undergone several changes of government since the Proclamation of Independence in 1971. Between the first recorded uprising in August 1975 and the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles revolt,Bangladesh has been through as many as 29 military coups.
Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of Bangladesh Army,also known as Army Chief,is the commander of the Bangladesh Army. The Chief of Army staff has been a four-star rank since 2007. Prior to that,the Chief of Army Staff was a three-star rank from 1978 to 2007. During the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971,Maj. Gen. M. A. Rab was the Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Army under the combined command of Bangladesh Forces which served as the origins of Bangladesh Armed Forces and General M. A. G. Osmani was the Commander-in-Chief. After the War of Independence,Bangladesh Army was officially reverted to the Ministry of Defense in 1972,and Maj. Gen. K. M. Shafiullah was appointed the Chief of Army Staff. The incumbent Chief of Army Staff is General Waker-uz-Zaman.
The Daily Star is a Bangladeshi English-language daily newspaper. It is by far the largest circulating English-language newspaper in the country. Founded by Syed Mohammed Ali on 14 January 1991,as Bangladesh transitioned and restored parliamentary democracy,the newspaper became popular for its outspoken coverage of politics,corruption,and foreign policy. It is considered a newspaper of record for Bangladesh. The newspaper has been described as having a "reputation for journalistic integrity and liberal and progressive views - a kind of Bangladeshi New York Times".
The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. The BNP government increased the chief justice's retirement age in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the alleged appointment of a Chief Adviser,a role which devolved to the President,Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League named Logi Boitha Andolan,with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.
Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Army general who was 11th Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 16 June 2002 to 15 June 2005. He was the last officer to serve in this position who had first been commissioned by and served with the Pakistani Army,before the Liberation War of 1971. He served for two years before the war.

Moeen Uddin Ahmed is a former Bangladesh Army general and the 12th Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 15 June 2005 to 15 June 2009 with last one-year extension during the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed. He has worked in Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad,Pakistan as a Defence Attachéin the rank of brigadier,and previously served as a UN Peacekeeper in United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda as a colonel in 1995.
The National Security Intelligence,commonly known as the NSI,is the principal civilian intelligence agency of Bangladesh. The NSI's headquarters is in Segunbagicha,Dhaka. The NSI is the leading body of the Government of Bangladesh in the field of internal security,counter terrorism,counter intelligence and foreign intelligence. NSI is the largest among the intelligence agencies in Bangladesh,the others being the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI),SB,CID,PBI and intelligence directorates of armed and paramilitary forces. The agency stands under the direct authority of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Mukhlesur Rahman Chowdhury,also known as Mokhles Chowdhury,is a Bangladeshi journalist and editor. He served as Press Secretary of the President Iajuddin Ahmed. Mukhles Chowdhury performed as an advisor to the President Iajuddin Ahmed during the Caretaker Government established in October 2006.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury is a retired Lieutenant General of the Bangladesh Army and former Director General of the Bangladesh Rifles during the conflicts with Border Security Force of India and skirmishes with Banga Sena group in the Bangladesh–India border. The 7 November 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état,also known as the Sipahi-Janata revolution,was a coup d'état launched by left-wing army personnel in collaboration with left-wing politicians from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. The coup resulted in the death of Major General Khaled Mosharraf,who only 3 days prior,led a coup against those involved in the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
