Sylvia Harris (born 1953 in Richmond, Virginia, died July 24, 2011) was an African-American graphic designer and design strategist. [1] [2] She has been considered a pioneer in the field of social impact design. [3]
In honor of her memory the American Institute of Graphic Arts created the Sylvia Harris Citizen Design Award, which honors a professional designer who has created a project that enhances public life. [4]
Harris was born in Richmond, Virginia during 1953. As she grew she experienced racism and attended a desegregated high school. Harris has stated that she remembers her mother shouting from her car at the Ku Klux Klan while they were displaying on the street. [5] Her experience as a young black woman growing up during desegregation in the South instilled in her a strong belief in social justice that can be seen through her artwork. [6] Her father coached women's sports, and her mother was an art teacher and artist. [5] After graduating high school Harris went on to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, where she graduated with a BFA in communication art and design with an undergraduate focus in film and photography in 1975. [7] [6] Harris attended graduate school at the Yale School of Art, where she graduated with an MFA in 1980. [6] She eventually married her husband Gary Singer, with whom she had one daughter, Thai. [6]
Harris died on July 24, 2011. [8] She had collapsed three days prior while attending a meeting in Washington, D.C. and was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where she later died due to heart problems. [9] [10]
Harris moved to Boston after college to work with architects in broadcast media. This was a formative time for Harris and led to her discovery of graphic design as a career path. Harris began working at Washington Business Group on Health, where Chris Pullman mentored her. Her second position was at Architects Collaborative working on environmental graphics. On Pullman's advice she left Architects Collaborative to earn an MFA in graphic design from Yale.
After graduating she co-founded Two Twelve Associates, Inc. with classmates David Gibson and Juanita Dugdale in 1980. Based in New York City, Two Twelve Associates designed work for some of the nation's largest hospitals. universities, and civic agencies through systems planning, policy development, and innovation management. [8] The firm became known for a term that Harris coined, "public information design" which embodies Harris' work for the rest of her career. During this time she did design work for a big client, Citibank. [7] The firm worked to help design their first ATM. Another large client that Two Twelve Associates did work for was the Central Park Zoo. They helped the zoo redo different displays and present information more effectively. While working at Two Twelve Associates, Harris found a passion for designing public information systems in a comprehensive and effective way. [8]
In 1994, she left Two Twelve Associates to form Sylvia Harris LLC. She focused on using design to solve problems for civic agencies, universities, and hospitals. She led her company with a mindset that made her workers truly care about the people for whom they were designing. She emphasized to her designers that the work they were doing had a big impact on her client's lives. [6]
She renamed Sylvia Harris LLC "Citizen Research and Design" while the company's focus shifted toward a design process driven by public research. In 2011 she co-founded the non-profit Public Policy Lab "committed to the more effective delivery of public services to the American people." [5] In 2014 she was awarded the American Institute of Graphic Arts medal. [7]
Harris was the creative director behind the design of the 2000 Census for the United States Census Bureau. The goal of the 1998 user-centered form redesign was to encourage Americans, including those who were previously underrepresented citizens, to participate. [11] Harris led a team consisting of Yale Graduate Design students, Two Twelve Associates, and Don Dillman in creating an effective and effective survey that would produce effective results. [11]
Sylvia Harris was hired as an independent project leader to design more effective communication with patients of New York-Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Center. This project emerged because of a 2001 New York-Presbyterian/Columbia survey that showed the majority of first-time patients got lost trying to get to their appointments. The reason patients got lost: poor signage, lack of funding for replacing outdated signage, accessibility issues (especially regarding the spectrum of individual physical needs), and bureaucratic red tape. Harris broke each project down into five steps. The first step: assessment, or getting to the cause of the problem. The second: management, making sure project scope is under control. Next: coming up with a strategy to fix the problem(s), then comes the actual design of the components of the solution. This step is often ongoing. Finally, implementation, meaning the process of negotiating with any stakeholders for final approval.
Sheila Levrant de Bretteville is an American graphic designer, artist and educator whose work reflects her belief in the importance of feminist principles and user participation in graphic design. In 1990 she became the director of the Yale University Graduate Program in Graphic Design and the first woman to receive tenure at the Yale University School of Art. In 2010 she was named the Caroline M. Street Professor of Graphic Design.
Michael Bierut is a graphic designer, design critic and educator, who has been a partner at design firm Pentagram since 1990. He designed the logo for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.
Jessica Helfand is a designer, author, and educator. She is a former contributing editor and columnist for Print, Eye and Communications Arts magazine, and founding editor of the website Design Observer. She is Senior Critic at Yale School of Art since 1994, a lecturer in Yale College, and Artist-in-Residence at Yale’s Institute for Network Science. Named the first Henry Wolf Resident in design at the American Academy in Rome in 2010, she is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and the Art Director’s Hall of Fame. In 2013, she won the AIGA medal.
Paul Scott Makela was a graphic designer, multimedia designer and type designer. Among other work, he was especially noted for the design of Dead History, a postmodern typeface that combined features of a rounded sans serif typeface and a crisp neo-classical serif typeface. With the emergence of the personal computer in the mid-1980s, Makela was among the first to explore digital programs such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. As a result, he created an idiosyncratic, original and highly controversial design aesthetic. In particular, his disregard for clean, modernist, problem-solving design agendas—synonymous with contemporary corporate graphic design—caused much debate among powerful, old-guard designers such as Massimo Vignelli, Paul Rand, and Henry Wolf.
William Drenttel was a designer, author, publisher, social entrepreneur and foundation executive. In 2012, he was the president of Winterhouse Institute, vice president of communications and design for Teach For All, co-director of the Transform Symposium at the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, and the recipient of Rockefeller Foundation support to develop models for design and social change. He was president emeritus of AIGA, a fellow of NYU Institute of the Humanities, a senior faculty fellow and social enterprise fellow at Yale School of Management, and the publisher and editorial director of Design Observer, a website covering design, social innovation, urbanism and visual culture. In 2010, Drenttel was elected to the Art Directors Hall of Fame and the Alliance Graphique Internationale, and was the first Henry Wolf Resident in Graphic Design at the American Academy in Rome. He lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad.
Lorraine Wild is a Canadian-born American graphic designer, writer, art historian, and teacher. She is an AIGA Medalist and principal of Green Dragon Office, a design firm that focuses on collaborative work with artists, architects, curators, editors and publishers. Wild is based in Los Angeles, California.
Jennifer Morla is an American graphic designer and professor based in San Francisco. She received the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award in Communication Design in 2017.
Cheryl Heller is an American business strategist and designer. She is the Founder of the first MFA program in Design for Social Innovation at the School of Visual Arts, President of the design lab "CommonWise", and winner of the AIGA Medal for her contribution to the field of design. She is a Rockefeller Bellagio Fellow Heller has been credited as founding the first design department in a major advertising agency. Her work focuses on investigating the contributions design have on human health and its impact on society.
Michael Patrick Cronan was an American graphic designer, brand strategist, adjunct professor, and fine art painter. He was one of the founders of the San Francisco Bay Area postmodern movement in graphic design, that later became known as the "Pacific Wave".

She is known for her contributions to racial and gender equality in the graphic design field, and establishing one of the first black-women-owned design firms in New York City in 1984.
