Thomas Joseph Lavin (born December 7, 1976) is an American BMX cyclist and the host of MTV's reality competition series The Challenge since its tenth season.

Early life

Thomas Joseph Lavin was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lavin first began to ride bikes when he was two. He eventually became a professional winning his first pro contest at the age of nineteen. [1]

Career

BMX

He has entered events including the X Games and the Dew Tour. In the X Games he took bronze three times, silver once, and gold three times (One was Australian). He has been a DK Dirt Circuit Champion, a champion in the Gravity Games, a European championship winner, and a CFB Champion. In 1995, he was crowned the "King of Dirt." He has a 1-acre (0.40 ha) BMX track in his backyard which includes several groomed trails and dirt jumps. [2]

Lavin was competing in a Dew Tour event in Las Vegas on October 14, 2010, where he crashed and was rushed to the hospital. Due to the critical injuries he sustained, he was put into a medically induced coma and developed a case of pneumonia shortly after. [3] [4] On October 20, Chas Aday, friend of Lavin, reported that Lavin was breathing on his own, following simple commands like squeezing hands or giving thumbs-up to the doctors and he was expected to make a full recovery. [5] Lavin was able to return home on November 16, 2010. [6]

According to Bleacher Report he is considered one of the greatest BMX riders of all time. [7]

Music

Self taught in playing the piano, Lavin used the recording studio in his home to record and release an album called LAVS the First SET. [7] In 2008, Lavin released the single "Soldier", a tribute to his long-time friend Stephen Murray. Stephen crashed during the Dew Action Sports Tour in Baltimore. He suffered a serious spinal injury during a double-backflip attempt on June 22, 2007. All sales from the single were donated to the Stephen Murray Family Fund. [2] [8] [7]

MTV

Lavin is the subject of the film A Film about T. J. Lavin. He appeared on an episode of MTV's Cribs . [9]

He has hosted spin-offs, specials, and MTV's reality-competition show The Challenge (originally titled Real World/Road Rules Challenge) since its eleventh season. [9]

Personal life

He married his longtime girlfriend Roxanne Siordia on November 2, 2012, in Las Vegas. The couple had been together for eight years and married on their anniversary. Through Siordia, Lavin has one stepdaughter, whom he has since adopted. [10]

David Michael Mirra was an American BMX rider who also competed in rallycross racing. He set the record for most medals in BMX Freestyle at the X Games and earned at least one BMX medal at the event in all but one year from the competition's inception in 1995 until 2009. He also competed for several years with the Subaru Rally Team USA as a rallycross driver. Mirra rode for and was fully sponsored by Haro Bikes from the mid-1990s until he started his own bike company. He was a member of the team which won the 2014 Race Across America four-person male category. Mirra died by suicide on February 4, 2016. He was inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame on June 11, 2016.

Nyquist is considered one of the greatest and diversely skilled BMX riders ever. Nyquist has won numerous gold medals in the X Games Dirt Jumping & Bike Park events. Recently Nyquist has had an interest in freeride mountain biking and has been training in mountain biking as well as BMX. He currently rides for Haro Bikes, Vans Shoes, Rockstar Energy Drink, and The Jiffy Market of Los Gatos.

The Gravity Games was a multi-sport competition originating in Providence, Rhode Island that was broken down into Winter and Summer adaptations. The competition featured a variety of extreme sports such as aggressive inline skating, skateboarding, freestyle motocross, BMX freestyle and snowboarding.

Ryan Guettler is a BMX Dirt and Freestyle rider from Beenleigh, Australia. Making his international debut at the 2001 Asian X Games alongside Colin MacKay and Jesse Boughton, Guettler won a silver medal, Colin won a bronze medal and Jesse took the gold. Ryan used his winnings to make his U.S. debut with Vans the next year, shortly after a showing in the Global X Games, where he represented Australia.

Scotty Cranmer is an American BMX rider. He is tied with Dave Mirra for the most X Games BMX Park medals with nine, three each in gold, silver and bronze over fourteen appearances. He attended Jackson Memorial High School. Nicknamed "the Bulldozer", he is sponsored by Vans Shoes, Hyper Bike Co., Fox Clothing, Pro-tec Helmets, Monster Energy and Snafu. He owns a bike shop in Howell, NJ called SC Action Sports Bicycle Shop. He is also widely known for having a YouTube channel under the name Scotty Cranmer in which he makes videos with his friends riding skateparks, driving cars, and playing games while riding their bikes. Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg is an American professional freestyle motocross rider and professional off-road truck racer. Stenberg received his nickname "Twitch" from his Tourette's syndrome, which he was diagnosed with at the age of eight. Brett Banasiewicz, nicknamed "Mad Dog", is an American professional BMX rider living in South Bend, Indiana. He became a professional BMX rider at the age of 13. In the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Brett competed in the BMX park discipline at the X Games finishing 4th, 7th and 4th respectively. On August 23, 2012, he crashed in a practice session at the Vans LXVI BMX Invitational at Virginia Beach, Virginia suffering a head injury.
