T24 is a Turkish online newspaper.

History

T24 was launched on 1 September 2009. [1] Initial staff of T24 were consisting of former Tempo24 employees. [1]

Contents

On 29 December 2012, T24 started their YouTube channel and uploaded their first video on 12 April 2013. In 2013, author and columnist Hasan Cemal joined T24. [5] In September 2013, T24 announced "T24 Okur Fonu" their crowdfunding venture that planned to collect funds from its readers. [6] [7] In September 2013, led by Hasan Cemal, Doğan Akın, Yavuz Baydar, Yasemin Çongar, Andrew Finkel, Hazal Özvarış and Murat Sabuncu, T24 staff established Punto24, a self-proclaimed "independent press platform". [8]

On 14 January 2015, T24 published an entire instalment of Charlie Hebdo, which included cartoons depicting Muhammad the Prophet, following 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting. [9] In February 2015, T24 started their online literary criticism initiative Kitap Kültür Kritik 24 (K24). [10] [11] Between 30 October and 13 November 2015, Nazlı Ilıcak published her columns as a "guest columnist" at T24. [12] [13]

In March 2016, columnist and literary critic Murat Belge joined T24. [14]

Following his departure from Doğan Media Group in September 2018, Mehmet Y. Yılmaz joined T24. [15] On 19 October 2018, T24 announced the arrival of Yılmaz. [16] On 23 October 2018, following the cancellation of her contract with CNN Türk co-administrator Şirin Payzın joined T24. [17] On 25 November 2018, a new periodical feature was introduced, "Şirin Payzın'la Ne Oluyor?", hosted by Şirin Payzın, which was begun to be aired on YouTube channel of T24. [18] On 17 December 2018, T24 publicised their weekly electronic outlook T24 Pazar, which is to be online-published every Sunday. [19]

In 2020, Doğan Akın, one of the founders of website and chief editor was put on a trial due to an allegation of "Support to a Terrorist Organization without having affiliation", as reporting the news based on tweets posted by Fuat Avni, an anonymous Tweeter account, which caused number of detentions of alleged persons affiliated FETÖ (formerly referred as "Gülen Movement" until colloquially known 17-25 December Operations taken place). [20] The case was settled as Akın was acquitted of accusation, on 2 July 2020. [21] [22]

On 17 May 2020, T24 announced the arrival of senior journalist and politician and writer Altan Öymen. [23]

Controversies

In June 2013, T24 columnist Alper Görmüş, who formerly worked at Nokta, Taraf and Yeni Aktüel, accused the Gezi Park protestors of being "pro-coup d'état" in his T24 column. [24] [25]

Chief editor Doğan Akın, a former Doğan Media Group employee before joining T24, was accused by Zekeriya Say in 2019, a columnist at Yeni Akit newspaper, of maintaining conflict of interest due to his allegedly neutrality-periling relations with 3rd parties, alleged misuse of his connections in order to obtain funding for the newspaper. [26]

Despite its claims of political neutrality, T24 was labelled as a left-liberal media outlet, by Nihat Genç. [27]

<i>Nokta</i> Turkish news magazine

Nokta was a leading Turkish weekly political news magazine. Founded in 1983, it was closed down by its owner in 2007 under military pressure after revealing several coup plots. Revived in 2015, it was closed again in the course of the 2016–17 Turkish purges.

Taraf was a liberal newspaper in Turkey. It had distinguished itself by opposing interference by the Turkish military in the country's social and political affairs. It was distributed nationwide, and had been in circulation since November 15, 2007. On July 27, 2016, the newspaper was closed under a statutory decree during the state of emergency after the 2016 Turkish coup d'état attempt, due to its alleged links with the coup plotters' Gülen movement.

NTV Spor is a Turkish online sports platform. NTV Spor used to be a nationwide TV channel between 2008 and 2018. As of April 2021, NTV Spor continues to produce content via their website and YouTube channel.

The Pangaltı Armenian Cemetery was located in the Pangaltı quarter of Istanbul near Taksim Square and originally belonged to the Surp Agop Armenian Hospital. Fuat Avni was an anonymous Twitter phenomenon, mostly known for tweets and leaks concerning the Justice and Development Party. The account tweeted its first tweet on 18 April 2014, and as of March 2021 it had 2.0 million followers.

Fi is a first internet TV series in Turkey, the Turkish psychological thriller television series originally streamed online by puhutv. It is an adaptation of award winning author Azra Kohen's trilogy novels Fi, Çi, and Pi. Its first season consists of 12 episodes which were released from 31 March 2017 to 16 June 2017. The second season started in October 2017.

Osman Kavala is a businessman, activist and philanthropist who has supported numerous civil society organizations in Turkey since the early 1990s. Kavala is the founder and chair of the board of Anadolu Kültür, an Istanbul-based nonprofit arts and culture organization. In 2019, he received the European Archaeological Heritage Prize from the European Association of Archaeologists for his efforts to protect and preserve significant examples of cultural heritage in danger in Turkey and the Ayşenur Zarakolu Freedom of Thought and Expression Award by Human Rights Association's Istanbul branch. His arrests in Turkey caused the European Court of Human Rights and ambassadors from ten Western countries to demand his release. These demands were rejected by Turkish courts and president Erdoğan.

Adalet Cimcoz was a Turkish voice actress, art curator, critic, translator and gossip columnist. She dubbed many film stars over a period of more than thirty years. She also opened and curated Turkey's first and only woman-owned private art gallery for exhibitions of painting, sculpture, mosaic, ceramics, photography, patterns, and folk art. She critiqued literature, art, and theatre for twenty years. She translated a number of classical works of European literature from German to Turkish. She was also a gossip columnist under the pen name "Fitne Fücur" ".

The Andiç scandal is the leaking of information to incriminate prominent journalists of an alleged cooperation with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The "Andıç" document was prepared by the Turkish Generals Çevik Bir and Erol Özkasnak. The document falsely claimed to include statements by Şemdin Sakık, one of the members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), who was caught in 1998 by the authorities. These statements were published in Hürriyet and Sabah newspapers for two days on April 25, 1998. With the publication of the confessions said to belong to Sakık, the journalists mentioned in the confessions were dismissed from their jobs and there was an assassination attempt on Akın Birdal, who survived with serious injuries. When he was later brought to court, Sakık declared that he did not make such a statement. In October 2000, Nazlı Ilıcak delivered a document to journalists showing that all this was part of a psychological warfare tactic prepared by the General Staff's intelligence, and ten days after the publication of the document, the General Staff acknowledged the existence of the document called "andiç".
