Taekwondo, Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do is a Korean form of martial arts involving punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and fast kicking techniques. Taekwondo at the Summer Olympics made its first appearance as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The opening ceremony featured a mass demonstration of taekwondo with hundreds of adults and children performing moves in unison. Taekwondo was again a demonstration sport at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Chen Zhong is a retired Chinese taekwondo competitor who represented her country at international level for more than 10 years, including three consecutive Summer Olympic Games. A badminton tournament was held at the 2001 Southeast Asian Games in Malawati Stadium, Selangor, Malaysia from 9 to 15 September 2001.

Elaine Teo Shueh Fhern is a Malaysian Taekwondo exponent. She is a holder of a 4th dan Taekwondo Black Belt from Korea and 5th dan Malaysia. She has represented Malaysia from 1999-2011 in various international tournaments. Her experience as a professional Taekwondo exponent has placed her on the pedestal of honour nationally and internationally. One of her most memorable experience was being the first Taekwondo exponent in Malaysia to qualify twice for the Olympic Games.

Taekwondo took place from September 30 to October 3 at the 1986 Asian Games in Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, South Korea. Men's competitions held in eight weight categories. The host nation South Korea dominated the competition winning seven out of eight possible gold medals.

Taekwondo at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games was held in Singapore EXPO Hall 2, Singapore from 12 to 14 June 2015.
