Taha Abdul-Basser was a Muslim Chaplain at Harvard University. [1] [2]
Abdul-Basser was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, where he attended Prep for Prep as well as The Dalton School. [3] [4] His father, Hasan Abdul-Basser, converted to Islam at age sixteen upon the advice of his mentor, Malcolm X. [5]
Abdul-Basser graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor's degree (A.B.) in the Comparative Study of Religion in 1996. [2] He also completed a Master's (A.M.) in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and is an ABD from the same department. [6] In addition, he has studied traditional Islamic disciplines with scholars from the Sudan, Tanzania, Yemen and Bahrain. He has received traditional licenses (ijazat; sing. ijazah) in Islamic law and ethics, Prophetic traditions (hadith) as well as other disciplines from several teachers, including Shaykh Nizam Yaquby; Shaykh Musa Maduri of Al-Azhar University; the qadi and mufti, Shaykh Muhammad al-Umrani; and Shaykh Dr. Muhammad Ghunaym. [5] In Yemen, he studied at the Spectra Institute of Language Studies as well as other smaller institutes. Currently, Abdul-Basser is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard working on a dissertation on post-formative Islamic ethics and traditional Arabic literary theory. He lives in a Boston suburb with his wife, Monifa Matthew (Harvard College `98) and their three children. [2]
Abdul-Basser is Principal and co-founder of the Straightway Ethical Advisory LLC, [7] a consulting group offering Islamic ethical advisory consultation services to the sharia-compliant financial services sector. [8] He serves as a consultant and researcher in the field of Islamic jurisprudence, specifically Islamic finance. In particular, he consults on investment banks, retail banks, investment funds, financial and legal advisories and other for-profit and not-for-profit entities. [6]
In 2008, Abdul-Basser was a featured panelist in the International Quality and Productivity Center's Islamic Finance World Summit held in New York City, New York. [9] In 2009, he was a conference speaker at the Milken Institute's Global Conference in Los Angeles, California. [10] In early 2010, Abdul-Basser served as a panelist on alternative dispute resolution in Islamic law at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). [11] He also has given lectures and presented papers on Islamic financial ethics at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Boston University, and Harvard Law School. [12] [13] Regarding the latter, he has served as a panelist, moderator, and banquet speaker at the biennial Harvard University Forum on Islamic Finance. [14] [15]
Abdul-Basser has also served as a lecturer in Arabic at Boston University and a Senior Tutorial Advisor at Harvard University's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. [6]
In his role as Harvard's Muslim Chaplain, Abdul-Basser has advocated multi-faith dialogue and cooperation. [16] He has been a part of multi-faith panels and discussion groups, as well as Jewish/Muslim text study groups. [17]
Abdul-Basser serves on the Shariah board of Wahed Invest and Javelin Investment Management.
In 2009, an article published in The Harvard Crimson derided one of Abdul-Basser's email responses to a question posed by a Harvard student on the topic of apostasy in Islam. Abdul-Basser responded to the student's question in his role as Harvard Muslim Chaplain. Abdul-Basser's original email appeared on private Harvard email lists but was leaked to the website TalkIslam.com, [18] generating interest outside the Harvard community. Opinion articles on the email also appeared in the Harvard Crimson and in the Washington Times. [19] [20] Abdul-Basser answered the student's question by stating, "[...] it would be better if people were to withhold from debating such [topics], since they tend not to have the requisite familiarity with such issues and competence to deal with them. Debating about religious matter is impermissible, in general, and people rarely observe the etiquette of disagreements." The email continues, “There is great wisdom (hikma) associated with the established and preserved position (capital punishment), and so, even if it makes some uncomfortable in the face of the hegemonic modern human rights discourse, one should not dismiss it out of hand." [19] [21] In subsequent statements, Abdul-Basser said that he was explaining to a student the traditional position of Islamic legal scholars and not advocating their position. “I have never expressed the position that individuals who leave Islam or convert from Islam to another religion must be killed. I do not hold this opinion personally,” Abdul-Basser said. He also explained that the “hikma” mentioned in the email was in reference to the scholars who have historically debated the legal issues on apostasy in Islamic law. Yusuf al-Qaradawi was an Egyptian Islamic scholar based in Doha, Qatar, and chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars. His influences included Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Qayyim, Sayyid Rashid Rida, Hassan al-Banna, Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi, Abul A'la Maududi and Naeem Siddiqui. He was best known for his programme الشريعة والحياة, al-Sharīʿa wa al-Ḥayāh, broadcast on Al Jazeera, which had an estimated audience of 40–60 million worldwide. He was also known for IslamOnline, a website he helped for establishment in 1997 and for which he served as chief religious scholar.

Apostasy in Islam is commonly defined as the abandonment of Islam by a Muslim, in thought, word, or through deed. It includes not only explicit renunciations of the Islamic faith by converting to another religion or abandoning religion, but also blasphemy or heresy by those who consider themselves Muslims, through any action or utterance which implies unbelief, including those who deny a "fundamental tenet or creed" of Islam. An apostate from Islam is known as a murtadd (مرتدّ).
Al-Ahbash, also known as the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects is a Sufi religious movement and, in Lebanon, political party, which was founded in the mid-1980s. The group follow the teachings of Ethiopian scholar Abdullah al-Harari. Due to the group's origins and activity in Lebanon, the Ahbash have been described as the "activist expression of Lebanese Sufism."

Abdul Majeed al-Zindani was a Yemeni Islamist politician and founder and head of the Iman University in Yemen. He was also the head of Al-Islah political movement and founder of the Commission on Scientific Signs in the Quran and Sunnah, based in Saudi Arabia. He has been described by Daniel Golden of the Wall Street Journal as "a charismatic Yemeni academic and politician" and by CNN as "a provocative cleric with a flaming red beard".
Johari Abdul-Malik Ibn Winslow Seale is a convert to Islam, and was previously the Director of Outreach for the Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center in Northern Virginia from June 2002 until June 2017.
Abd al-Haqq (Muhaddith) al-Dehlawi was an Islamic scholar, Sufi and author from India.
Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim is an Iraqi cleric and politician who led the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI), from 2009 to 2017. He is currently the head of the National Wisdom Movement which is a political coalition in Iraq that was formed to contest the 2018 general election.
Abdallah bin Mahfudh ibn Bayyah is a Mauritanian Islamic scholar, politician and professor of Islamic studies at the King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, who serves as the chairman of the UAE Council for Fatwa.
Rabīʿ bin Hādī ʿUmayr al-Madkhalī is a Saudi professor who is a former head of the Sunnah Studies Department at the Islamic University of Madinah. He is a Salafi Muslim scholar who is considered to be one of Salafism's prominent thinkers. He was most active in the 90’s and early 2000s where he received praise from other Salafi scholars like Shaykh Salih Ibn Uthaymeen and Shaykh Abdul Aziz Bin Baz. Another prominent Salafi scholar named Imam al-Albani labelled him the leader of criticism and praise, although he himself later rejected the title.
Hossam AlJabri is an activist, preacher and speaker on Islam and Muslims. He is the former Executive Director of a national Muslim organization, the Muslim American Society. He is the former president of the Muslim American Society – Boston Chapter, and a trustee of the Interreligious Center on Public Life (ICPL). He is a signatory of the "Building a Community of Trust" declaration of peace, affirming a positive relation between Jews and Muslims and the right of both people to live and prosper in Israel/Palestine. AlJabri is a speaker in national conferences, such as the MAS-ICNA national conventions.
Mahmoud Mohammed Taha, also known as Ustaz Mahmoud Mohammed Taha, was a Sudanese religious thinker, leader, and trained engineer. He developed what he called the "Second Message of Islam", which postulated that the verses of the Qur'an revealed in Medina were appropriate in their time as the basis of Islamic law, (Sharia), but that the verses revealed in Mecca represented the ideal and universal religion, which would be revived when humanity had reached a stage of development capable of implementing them, ushering in a renewed era of Islam based on the principles of freedom and equality. He was executed for apostasy for his religious preaching at the age of 76 by the regime of Gaafar Nimeiry.
ʻAbd al-Baṣīr is a male Arabic given name. It is built from the Arabic words ʻabd and al-Baṣīr, one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names. It means "servant of the All-seeing".
Habib Umar bin Hafiz is a Yemeni Sunni and Sufi Islamic scholar, teacher, and founder and dean of Dar al-Mustafa Islamic seminary. He also a member of the Supreme Advisory Council for the Tabah Foundation in Abu Dhabi.
Gibril Fouad Haddad is a Lebanese-born Islamic scholar, hadith expert (muhaddith), author, and translator of classical Islamic texts. He was featured in the inaugural list of The 500 Most Influential Muslims and has been called "one of the clearest voices of traditional Islam in the Western world", a "prominent orthodox Sunni" and a "staunch defender of the traditional Islamic schools of law." He holds ijazas from over 150 scholars across the Muslim world. He was a visiting fellow (2013-2015) then senior assistant professor (2015-2018) at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Center for Islamic Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. He is also a staunch critic of Wahhabism and Salafism.
Muhammad Taqi Amīni was an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar, jurist, Urdu author and the dean of Theology faculty of Aligarh Muslim University. He is known for his works on Islamic jurisprudence, and his book Fiqh Islami ka Tareekhi Pas-e-Manzar is a required reading for master's degree in Islamic studies at the Islamic University of Science & Technology.
Amer Jamil is an Islamic scholar and co-founder of the Solas Foundation and iSyllabus programme, the latter of which he is currently the Project Director. He holds a (LLB) law degree from the University of Strathclyde and BA (Hons) in Islamic studies from the University of Wales. He was also previously the Muslim Chaplain at Glasgow Caledonian University.
The situation for apostates from Islam varies markedly between Muslim-minority and Muslim-majority regions. In Muslim-minority countries, "any violence against those who abandon Islam is already illegal". But in some Muslim-majority countries, religious violence is "institutionalised", and "hundreds and thousands of closet apostates" live in fear of violence and are compelled to live lives of "extreme duplicity and mental stress."
