Taibang Keithel (English: Living Market) is a 2018 comedy Indian Meitei language film written and directed by Satyajit BK and produced by Miltan Langonjam, under the banner of Soraren Films. [1] It stars Khwairakpam Bishwamittra in the lead role. The movie was premiered at Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), Palace Compound, on 9 September 2018. [2]

The film was released by Amitra Video in DVD on 4 March 2020. Taibang Keithel has no female characters. The director clarified that the casting of only male characters was not intentional.

Synopsis

The movie centres around a village man Ahanjao who comes to Imphal, the capital city of Manipur in search for a job. He got caught in a series of incidents which never ought to happen. The movie revolves around how he tries to find himself out of these entangled incidents. It also shows how the capital city changes in due course of time.

Tenao HD composed the soundtrack for the film and Satyajit BK wrote the lyrics. The song is titled Taibang Keithel Karakpani.

Shumang Kumhei, also known as Shumang Leela, is a Meitei traditional form of theatre, usually performed in Manipur, North East India. The theatre is arranged in the form of open air from four sides. The roles are all played by male actors, some dressed as beautiful ladies. The role of male characters are played by female artists in case of female theatre groups. This traditional theatre form was prevalent since the time of monarchical rule in Manipur. But the proper form of Shumang Leela had its inception in 1895 A.D.

Makhonmani Mongsaba is an Indian author, actor, producer and director from Imphal, Manipur. He got his doctorate degree in Manipuri from Manipur University. In 2013, he won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his book Chinglon Amadagi Amada, a travelogue. He published the book Matamgi Manipur:The First Manipuri Feature Film by Bobby Wahengbam under the name Angomningthou Preservation and Documentation. Shougrakpam Hemanta is an Indian comedian, actor, writer and director, who has worked in various Shumang Kumhei plays and Manipuri films. He is well known for his role of Oja Tolhan in Eegi Mahao and his portrayal of the titular role in the movie Mantri Dolansana. In 2017, he was conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in recognition of his contribution in the traditional Meitei theatre of the Shumang Kumhei. With this, he became the first person to receive the award for this art form.

It was later released at Pratap Talkies, Paona Bazar and many other theatres of Manipur in 2010.

The film stars Leishangthem Tonthoi in the lead role. It was premiered at Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), Imphal on 26 June 2022. The film got official selections at the 4th Nepal Cultural International Film Festival 2022, Druk International Film Festival 2022 (Bhutan), Festivus Film Fest Canada 2022, Dadashaheb Phalke International Film Festival India 2023 and Gangtok International Film Festival 2022. It was screened at the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival in 'Short and Documentary Panorama section' on 19th and 21st December 2022 at Nandan-III and Sichir Mancha, Kolkata. The film was certified by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in 2022.
