Taix (formerly Les Freres Taix) is a French restaurant in Los Angeles, California, founded in 1927. The restaurant complex features open and private dining rooms, banquet halls, and a cocktail lounge with live music called the 321 Lounge. The restaurant is currently located at 1911 Sunset Boulevard in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The Taix family came to Los Angeles from the Hautes-Alpes region of France in 1870 and opened a hotel in downtown Los Angeles. [1] French immigrants represented 20% of the city's population in the middle of the 19th century and the neighborhood that is today's Chinatown was home to a French hospital, French theater, and weekly French language newspaper. [2] Owners Marius Taix, Marius Taix, Jr., and Louis Larquier ran the casual restaurant with French country meals served at long communal tables. The brick building had a tin ceiling, hanging chandeliers, and dark wood floors. [3] Owing to its location in the civic center, the restaurant was popular with government workers [1] and reporters from the Los Angeles Times and held a special table reserved for staff. [4] When the restaurant was demolished, the Los Angeles Times noted that its patrons “included the celebrated and the notorious of Los Angeles civic life.” [5]
The building at 321 Commercial Street near Union Station had originally housed a pharmacy belonging to Marius Taix, [6] and during prohibition the restaurant served “medicinal” wine to city officials and other select customers in a private dining room. [7] 10 The original Taix closed in 1964 when it was purchased by the city of Los Angeles and replaced with a parking structure. [5]
Two years before the closure, Marius Taix Jr. and Louis Larquier opened a new Taix in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The New York Times described the architecture of the restaurant as “Los Angeles chalet. [3] ” Food critic Lois Dwan described the fare in 1970 as “bountiful portions of simply prepared foods and moderate prices. [6] ” Taix is a destination for baseball fans before or after a game at nearby Dodger Stadium. [8] The 321 Lounge is named for the restaurant's original address at 321 Commercial Street in Los Angeles. [8]
Fourth generation owner Michael Taix sold the restaurant to real estate developers in 2019 who plan to replace it with a multi-story apartment building. [9] In October, 2020 the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission began discussions on the designation of the Taix building as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. [10] In 2021 it was decided the building would not be a monument, but rather the property and restaurant features, thereby allowing the demolition and redevelopment to proceed. [11]
Pioneer Chicken is an American fried chicken restaurant chain which was founded in Echo Park, Los Angeles in 1961 by H. R. Kaufman. When Kaufman sold the chain in 1987, there were 270 restaurants operated by 220 franchisees.

Los Angeles State Historic Park (LASHP) is a California State Park within the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Also known as the Cornfield, the former brownfield consists of a long open space between Spring Street and the tracks of the Metro Gold Line. Located outside the main commercial and residential area in the northeast portion of Chinatown, the area is adjacent and southeast of the Elysian Park neighborhood.
Chinatowns are enclaves of Chinese people outside of China. The first Chinatown in the United States was San Francisco's Chinatown in 1848, and many other Chinatowns were established in the 19th century by the Chinese diaspora on the West Coast. By 1875, Chinatowns had emerged in eastern cities such as New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 barred Chinese immigration to the United States, but the Magnuson Act of 1943 repealed it, and the population of Chinatowns began to rise again. In the 2010s, the downturn in the U.S. economy caused many Chinese Americans to return to China.
Sam Wo is a Chinese restaurant located in San Francisco, California. The restaurant's first location on 813 Washington Street was famous for being a venerable mainstay in the local Chinatown area, having been in the same location since 1912. Sam Wo gained notoriety in the 1980s for being the employer of Edsel Ford Fung, who was known locally as the "world's rudest waiter". The restaurant was closed in 2012 due to safety concerns, and reopened in 2015 on nearby Clay Street.
Pok Pok was a group of Thai restaurants based in Portland, Oregon, founded and led by chef Andy Ricker. Pok Pok won both local recognition and major industry awards, with The Oregonian describing the restaurant as "one of those quintessentially Portland institutions, a sort of rags-to-riches story of the street cart that became a restaurant that became a legend." The main restaurant was located on Southeast Division Street in Portland; with its success Ricker opened satellite locations elsewhere in Portland, and at various times in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Its remaining locations closed in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Asiatown, also spelled AsiaTown and formerly known as Chinatown, is a Chinatown located in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. Chinese people, brought to the country as railroad workers, established the area in the 1860s. The area became known as Chinatown in the 1920s, and was then centered at Rockwell Avenue and E. 22nd Street. Large numbers of non-Chinese people from Asia settled in the area in the 1960s and 1970s, leading to the enclave's expansion eastward. The expanded enclave was named Asiatown in 2006, with that portion on Rockwell Avenue often being referred to as "Old Chinatown" or "Historic Chinatown".
Little Pine was a fine-dining vegan bistro located in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. It was founded by electronic musician and animal rights activist Moby. In July 2020, local plant-based investors took over operations of the restaurant. The restaurant served organic, vegan, Mediterranean-inspired dishes and has a retail section with art and books, curated by Moby himself. Moby's vision was to create a space that includes various aspects of society that he cares about. The restaurant closed down in December 2022.
The NoMad was an integrated hotel and restaurant owned by the Sydell Group and located in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The restaurant of the same name was conceived by chef Daniel Humm and restaurateur Will Guidara of nearby Eleven Madison Park. The hotel was sometimes referred to as NoMad New York to differentiate from its sister locations in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The building is a contributing property to the Madison Square North Historic District, a New York City Landmark.
The Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge are a Chinese restaurant and bar in Portland, Oregon's Old Town Chinatown, in the United States. The restaurant is one of Portland's oldest, established in 1922, and continues to operate under the Mui family's ownership. Serving Chinese cuisine such as Mongolian beef, General Tso's chicken, chop suey, and egg foo young, the Republic Cafe has been described as a "staple" of the neighborhood and the city's Chinese American history. Celebrities have visited the restaurant which has also seen several longtime employees. Ming Lounge is among the city's oldest bars and has been characterized as "seedy".
