Early life and career

Japua was born on 29 November 1956 in the village of Chlou, Ochamchira District. In 1977, she graduated from the philology faculty of the Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute. From 1987 until 1990, she taught at the department for Abkhazian literature of the Abkhazian State University. From 1990 onwards, Japua worked as research fellow and senior researcher at the Abkhazian Institute of History, Language and Literature. [1]

Ochamchira District District in Abkhazia/Georgia

Ochamchira District is a district of the partially recognised Abkhazia. Its capital is Ochamchire, the town by the same name. The district is smaller than the Ochamchire district in the de jure subdivision of Georgia, as some of its former territory is now part of Tkvarcheli District, formed by de facto Abkhaz authorities in 1995. The population of the Ochamchira district is 24,629 according to the 2003 census. Until the August 2008 Battle of the Kodori Valley, some mountainous parts of the district were still under Georgian control, as part of Upper Abkhazia.

Abkhazian State University university

The Abkhazian State University is the only university in Abkhazia. It was founded in 1979 on the basis of the Sukhumi Pedagogical Institute. Its first rector was Zurab Anchabadze.

Member of Parliament

In the November 1996 elections, Japua successfully ran for a seat of the 2nd convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia. She served one term, until 2002. [1]

Minister for Education

In 2001, Japua became head of the National Foundation for the Development of the Abkhaz Language. On 13 November 2003, she was appointed Minister for General, Secondary and Higher Education in the cabinet of Prime Minister Raul Khajimba, after Abkhazian State University Rector Aleko Gvaramia had resigned from the post. Raul Khajimba Abkhazian politician

Raul Jumkovich Khajimba is the current President of Abkhazia, having been elected in 2014 after the May Revolution. He was also Chairman of the Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia from 2010–2015. Khajimba previously held the offices of Vice President (2005–2009), Prime Minister (2003–2004) and Defence Minister (2002–2003). He unsuccessfully ran for President in 2004, 2009 and 2011.

Japua was re-appointed as Education Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Nodar Khashba, but she resigned on 1 February 2005, less than two weeks before the inauguration of newly-elected President Sergei Bagapsh. [4]

Sergei Bagapsh Abkhazian politician

Sergei Uasyl-ipa Bagapsh was the second President of the Republic of Abkhazia. He was Prime Minister from 1997 to 1999 and was later elected as President in 2005. He was re-elected in the 2009 presidential election. He died on 29 May 2011, at the age of 62, from complications of surgery.

State TV and Radio General Director

On 4 November 2016, Japua was appointed as the new General Director of the Abkhazian State TV and Radio, [1] succeeding Leonid Enik, who wanted to resign after less than a year due to ill health. [5] Her appointment was criticised with the question whether she could be sufficiently independent as long as Japua's husband Aslan Kobakhia held the post of Vice Premier and Interior Minister. [6]

The Abkhazian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company is Abkhazia's public television and radio broadcaster, founded in 1976. Its sole TV channel, Apsua TV, started broadcasting on November 6, 1976.

Leonid Enik was Minister for Culture of Abkhazia from 2001 until 10 March 2005. He was born in 1960 in the village of Mgudzurkhva in Gudauta District.

Aslan Kobakhia is one of three current Vice Premiers and the current Minister for Internal Affairs of Abkhazia.

Gulripshi District District in Abkhazia, Georgia

Gulripshi District is a district of Abkhazia, one of Georgia’s breakaway republics. It corresponds to the eponymous Georgian district. Its capital is Gulripshi, the town by the same name. Until the August 2008 Battle of the Kodori Valley, the north-eastern part of Gulripshi district was part of Upper Abkhazia, the corner of Abkhazia controlled by Georgia until the Battle of the Kodori Valley during the August 2008 South Ossetia War. Upper Abkhazia was home to 1,956 of the district's 19,918 inhabitants, most of whom were ethnic Svans. Most of these fled before the battle and have not yet returned.

Tkvarcheli District District in Abkhazia, Georgia

Tkvarcheli District is one of the districts of Abkhazia. It has no equivalent Georgian district, as it was newly formed in 1995 from parts of Ochamchira District and Gali District, centered on its eponymous capital, Tkvarcheli. The population of the district was 14,477 at the time of the 2003 census. By the 2011 census, it had increased to 16,012. Of note is Bedia Cathedral located within the district.

2009 Abkhazian presidential election election

On 12 December 2009, Abkhazia held its fourth Presidential election since the post of President of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia was created in 1994. The election was won by incumbent president Sergei Bagapsh in the first round with 61% of the votes, thus gaining a second term in office. He was inaugurated on 12 February 2010. Bagapsh competed against four opposition candidates: former Vice President and Prime Minister Raul Khajimba, who came second behind Bagapsh in the 2004 Presidential election, and newcomers Beslan Butba, Zaur Ardzinba and Vitali Bganba. Khajimba had stated that he, Ardzinba and Butba would support each other should one of them reach the second round of the election.

Party for the Economic Development of Abkhazia political party

The Party for the Economic Development of Abkhazia is an opposition party in Abkhazia led by businessman Beslan Butba.

Beslan Butba is a businessman and a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia. He owns Abkhazia's only private television station Abaza TV and is the chairman of the Party of the Economic Development of Abkhazia. Butba was an unsuccessful candidate in the December 2009 presidential election.

Media in Abkhazia consists of several TV channels, newspapers, magazines and radio stations. Some of them are government-owned, others are private. Apsnypress is the government information agency. Russian media are generally also available and is popular.

Government of President Ardzinba

The Government of President Vladislav Ardzinba was the first Government of the Republic of Abkhazia.

The Abkhazian Revolution took place in 2014, when President Aleksandr Ankvab resigned after hundreds of demonstrators stormed his office. After mass protests in the capital Sukhumi and the occupation of his office on 27 May, Ankvab fled to his hometown of Gudauta and ultimately resigned on 1 June, after previously denouncing the demonstration as an attempted coup d'état.

The Minister for Internal Affairs holds a ministerial position in the government of the Republic of Abkhazia. The post existed in the Soviet period within the Council of Ministers of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and since then has been occupied by 10 politicians, of whom three have occupied it twice. The current Minister is Aslan Kobakhia.

Adgur Lushba is a politician in Abkhazia. He is currently deputy Head of the Presidential Administration under Raul Khajimba. In the past, he has served as Minister for Economy and as Minister for Taxes and Fees in the Government of President Ardzinba.

Beslan Eshba is a vice premier of Abkhazia and the head of a sociopolitical organization Apsadgyl. Prior to his current position, he was a deputy commander in the Sukhumi battalion and an advisor to the President of Abkhazia.
