Rakhine State, formerly known as Arakan State, is a state in Myanmar (Burma). Situated on the western coast, it is bordered by Chin State to the north, Magway Region, Bago Region and Ayeyarwady Region to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh to the northwest. It is located approximately between latitudes 17°30' north and 21°30' north and longitudes 92°10' east and 94°50' east. The Arakan Mountains or Rakhine Yoma separated Rakhine State from central Burma from North to South. Off the coast of Rakhine State there are some fairly large islands such as Ramree, Cheduba and Myingun. Rakhine State has an area of 36,762 square kilometres (14,194 sq mi) and its capital is Sittwe.
Kyaukphyu is a major town in Rakhine State, in western Myanmar. It is located on the north western corner of Yanbye Island on Combermere Bay, and is 250 miles (400 km) north-west of Yangon. It is the principal town of Kyaukphyu Township and Kyaukphyu District. The town is situated on a superb natural harbor which connects the rice trade between Calcutta and Yangon. The estimated population in 1983 was 19,456 inhabitants. The population of Kyaukphyu's urban area is 20,866 as of 2014, while Kyaukphyu Township's population is 165,352.
Ramree or Ramarwaddy also known as Yanbye is a town in Kyaukpyu District, Rakhine State, Myanmar. Ramree is situated on Ramree Island. Ramree is the capital of the township of the same name and former capital of the district of Ramree. It is close to the east coast of the Ramree island, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of the Tan River. The population of Ramree (Yanbye) Urban area is 9,581 as of 2014, while Ramree Township's population is 97,891. The town was captured by the Arakan Army in March 2024 from the Tatmadaw during the ongoing Myanmar civil war.
The 82nd Division was formed under British control during the Second World War. It took part in the later stages of the Burma Campaign and was disbanded in Burma between May and September 1946.

Sakanmaw is a village in Ann Township, Kyaukpyu District, in the Rakhine State of southwestern Burma. It is located 22.9 kilometres (14.2 mi) by road south of Ann. The village is narrow and long in shape, sandwiched between the highway and a meandering river. The 10 IAF Squadron of the Indian Air Force wiped out the village during World War II because it was an important Japanese concentration point. To the south of Sakanmaw a roofed flat-boat over 60 feet long was attacked.
