Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ) is an Islamic organization based in Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 2004. TNTJ claims to preach true Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims as per Quran and Prophetic ways. Ideologically due to its theological stand, it considers only a sovereign state can take up weapons and any thing contrary is against the fundamentals of Islam. TNTJ is also involved in social activities and awareness of condemning extremism through rallies [1] [2] and propaganda.
Donation of blood is highly encouraged among TNTJ followers. [3] It has won government awards for making the highest amount of blood donations in Tamil Nadu in about 10 successive years. It has offered help and support during tsunami relief in several affected areas. Its relief program during Chennai flood of 2015, whose estimated cost was twenty five crore, was a noticeable one. TNTJ has also created awareness among masses about dengue fever. [4]
TNTJ has held demonstrations and protests across Tamil Nadu several times on various issues including reconstruction of Babri Masjid, removal of liquor shops and load shedding. [5] [6] [7] Its leaders encourages followers to observe peaceful protests and to avoid any inconvenience to traffic. [8] In September 2012, the U.S. Consulate encouraged U.S. citizens traveling in and around Chennai to exercise caution and monitor local media for security updates, owing to a protest by TNTJ following an anti-Islamic movie. [9] [10] On 28 January 2014, TNTJ organized a protest to demand increase in reservation for Muslims in Tamil Nadu. [11]
In May 2018, P Jainulabideen, the founder of TNTJ, was expelled from the organisation after the release of several audios. [12] [13] [14]
As reported by three references provided, on March 19, 2022, Tamil Nadu police arrested a leader of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath over allegations of issuing death threat to the judges of the Karnataka High Court concerning the court's verdict on a case related to wearing hijab in schools and colleges where the school or college uniform is mandated. [15]

The 2013 Indian film Vishwaroopam was subjected to several controversial issues. The first of this kind was the title naming issue, where the Hindu Makkal Katchi party demanded the change from its current Sanskrit title to a purely Tamil one. When Kamal Haasan announced a direct-to-home (DTH) premiere of the film, theatre owners demanded a rollback of this plan, as they feared major revenue losses to DTH companies. Threatened by a complete theatre boycott of Vishwaroopam, Haasan agreed to release the film first in theatres. Later, Muslim groups in Tamil Nadu demanded the ban of the film and claimed, that the film would hurt Muslim sentiments. Although the film was cleared by Central Board of Film Certification of India, district collectors in the state of Tamil Nadu gave orders to the theatre owners to not show Vishwaroopam, citing law and order problems, however the film released in other states with greater Muslim populations than in Tamil Nadu. The ban in Tamil Nadu triggered the stop of screenings in neighbouring Indian states as well as a few foreign markets.
The 2008 Karnataka-Tamil Nadu alcohol poisonings was an incident in the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in May 2008 in which 180 people reportedly died after consuming illicit liquor. This incident is considered to be the worst methanol poisoning in the country since at least 2000.

Sasi Perumal was a Gandhian activist and anti-liquor activist from Salem, Tamil Nadu. He protested for the enforcement of prohibition in Tamil Nadu for over four decades. He died near Marthandam in Kanyakumari after staging a demonstration atop a BSNL tower for the removal of a TASMAC outlet near a church at Unnamalaikkadai.
P. Jainulabideen, also known as PJ is an Islamic scholar, teacher and preacher, primarily in the Tamil language and also co-founder of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazagham in 1995. After the political stand of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam he walked out from TMMK and started an Islamic non-profit organization, Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath. He is one of the Pioneers in the region who advocated that Quran and Sunnah as the sole sources of religious authority and oppose everything introduced in Islam after the earliest times. He has been extremely vocal against Terrorism and Dowry among Islamic Community in Tamil Nadu south India.
Nandhini Anandan is an anti-liquor-activist from India who, for the past five years, has been leading an anti-liquor movement across Tamil-nadu. She does campaigns along with her father at public places to raise awareness regarding some of the ill-effects of alcohol. She has been arrested, 55 times as of 2016, due to her protests.
The 2018 Kaveri River water sharing protests are a series of ongoing protests on the issue of water sharing problems from the River Kaveri between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka which are two states in India. The Kaveri water dispute has been a major controversial issue between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the years and the issue has been raised further with protests have been conducted across the state of Tamil Nadu by several groups including from the large pile of actors and directors who have temporarily stopped working on their projects, films over the Karnataka's sharing the Kaveri water to Tamil Nadu. The delay in establishing a Cauvery Management Board in order to share equal river share award has sparked off protests in Tamil Nadu against the Karnataka state government.
#GoBackModi is a hashtag and movement that protests and voices opposition against the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi's visits to various places, primarily throughout India, and sporadically throughout the world. The hashtag first gained popularity on 12 April 2018, when Modi visited Chennai, Tamil Nadu to inaugurate a defence exhibition, and has been especially popular in the state ever since. However, the movement's first instance was a Malayalam language variation of the hashtag named #PoMoneModi, and has been adopted since May 2016, when Modi was campaigning for elections in Kerala.
At the beginning of February 2022, a dispute pertaining to school uniforms was reported in the Indian state of Karnataka, when some Muslim students of a junior college who wanted to wear hijab to classes were denied entry on the grounds that it was a violation of the college's uniform policy which was also followed by the other religion students as well. Over the following weeks, the dispute spread to other schools and colleges across the state, with groups of Hindu students staging counter-protests by demanding to wear saffron scarves. On 5 February, the Karnataka government issued an order stating that uniforms must be worn compulsorily where policies exist and no exception can be made for the wearing of the hijab. Several educational institutions cited this order and denied entry to Muslim girls wearing the hijab.
