Tandeka Gqada is a South African businesswoman,politician and a councillor for the Democratic Alliance in the City of Cape Town since November 2021. Gqada had previously served as a DA councillor in the City of Cape Town where she was an Executive Member of the Mayoral Committee. She is a former Member of Parliament for the DA (2014–2019). She served as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Human Settlements from 2014 to 2017 and as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Energy from 2017 to 2019.
Gqada completed a Management Development Programme,a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Human Resources Management Programme through the University of South Africa. She then worked for UNISA for nine years,before working for Old Mutual and the Nedbank group. In 2010,Gqada became interested in politics and after meeting Masizole Mnqasela,a DA Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament,at the opening of a Nedbank branch where Mnqasela had spoken,Gqada decided to join the Democratic Alliance. She was elected as a DA PR councillor in the City of Cape Town in the 2011 municipal elections as the DA won a majority of seats on the council. [1] [2] Incoming DA mayor Patricia de Lille appointed Gqada as the Executive Mayoral Committee Member for the Community Services Portfolio. Gqada's appointment took effect when De Lille was elected mayor. [3] [4] In February 2013,Gqada was moved to the human settlements portfolio. [5]
Gqada stood as a DA parliamentary candidate in the 2014 national elections as a candidate on the DA's national and regional lists. She was elected to the National Assembly and became the DA's shadow deputy minister for human settlements. [6] In November 2016,Gqada was moved to the energy portfolio. Her appointment took effect in January 2017. [7] [8]
In June 2017,Gqada witnessed the fatal shooting of the DA's councillor for Phillipi East,Xolile Gwangxu. In a subsequent Facebook post,Gqada said that the shooting left her traumatised,unable to sleep after seeing Gwangxu fall to the ground. [9]
Gqada stood for re-election in 2019. She was the 134th candidate on the DA's national list and the 39th candidate on the DA's Western Cape list. [10] She lost her seat at the election. [11]
Gqada was high up on the DA's PR candidate list for the City of Cape Town for the municipal elections on 1 November 2021,meaning that she would easily be elected back to the council at the election. [12] She was elected back to council and she was sworn in as a councillor on 9 November 2021. [13]
In March 2022,she accused the deputy chief whip of the DA in the city council Errol Anstey of making racist remarks towards her during a caucus session lunch break. In a leaked e-mail sent to all the DA councillors in the metro,Gqada said that after she asked whether it was lunch time,because she saw that some of her colleagues were going down to the dining hall,Anstey allegedly told her that she needs to go back to the Eastern Cape,because her "food is there". When she confronted Anstey,he told her that his words were meant as a "joke". [14] [15]
John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has served as the twentieth leader of the Opposition since October 2019 and has been the leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2020,having served as the interim leader for one year from November 2019. He was chief whip of the official opposition from May 2014 until October 2019. Ideologically,Steenhuisen has been described as a classical liberal,a supporter of non-racialism and a firm believer in racial equality.
Makashule Gana is a South African politician who served as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for the opposition Democratic Alliance. He was previously a member of the National Assembly,where he was Shadow Minister of Human Settlements between 2014 and 2016. Gana also served as the Deputy Federal Chairperson of the DA until 2015. He was previously leader of the DA Youth and DA councillor in the City of Johannesburg,he holds a BSc degree and is currently registered for a Postgraduate Diploma in Management at the Wits Business School.

Mmusi Aloysias Maimane is a South African politician,businessman,and leader of Build One South Africa,a political party. Maimane is also the former Leader of South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) political party from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019,and the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019. He is the former leader of the DA in the Johannesburg City Council and the DA National Spokesperson. In 2011,he was elected to be the DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 municipal elections. In that election,Maimane helped to grow the party's voter base,but was not elected mayor. Thereafter he served as Leader of the Official Opposition on the Johannesburg City Council until May 2014. In addition to his political career,he is also a pastor and elder at Liberty Church. He formed the One South Africa Movement in 2020. Mmusi Maimane launched this new political party on 24 September 2022
The Democratic Alliance held its 6th Federal Congress in Port Elizabeth,Eastern Cape from 9 May to 10 May 2015. After incumbent leader Helen Zille announced she would not seek reelection,the Congress became focused on the contest to succeed her.
The Shadow Cabinet of Mmusi Maimane was formed on 5 June 2014 in South Africa following his election as Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Leader of the Opposition on 29 May 2014. The Democratic Alliance parliamentary caucus also elected other caucus leadership. John Steenhuisen was elected Chief Whip with Anchen Dreyer as Caucus Chairperson. These elections all occurred following the 2014 general elections,in which the Democratic Alliance retained its post as the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced on 20 March 2019 that a record number of 48 parties had registered candidates for the national parliamentary election. Siviwe Gwarube is a South African politician who has served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition since August 2022. She has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2019. Graham has been the party's Shadow Minister of Electricity since 2023.
