Lieutenant Colonel (Dismissed) Tareque Sayeed Mohammad is a former Bangladeshi Army officer who was convicted in the Narayanganj Seven murder case. [1] He was the commanding officer of Bangladesh elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11. He is the Son in Law of former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury.

Murder conviction

Seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation Panel Mayor Nazrul Islam, senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, their two drivers and three associates, were abducted from the Dhaka–Narayanganj link road on 27 April 2014. Three days later, their bodies were found floating in the river Shitalakkhya. [2] Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) involvement in the killings came to light when Nazrul's father-in-law, Shahidul Islam, alleged that RAB personnel had abducted and killed Nazrul in exchange for Tk  60 million from Narayanganj Ward Councillor Nur Hossain and his aides. [3]

Tareque Sayeed, Major Arif Hossain, Lt commander Masud Rana, Awami League leader Nur Hossain and 22 others were found guilty and received the death penalty. Nine other accused were sentenced to between 7 and 17 years in prison. [1]

Further accusations

Tareque Sayeed became the Commanding Officer of RAB-11 on 3 November 2013. [4] Arif Hossain joined RAB-11 on 1 February 2013 and Rana joined RAB-11 on 2 July 2013. [4] Sayeed and RAB-11 have been accused of abduction and killings in at least a dozen cases, including: [5] [6]

Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the Government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar, at least 402 people were victims of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh have been criticized by the United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh, is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances, but the RAB denies these allegations. The Awami League regime has denied involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.

Chowdhury is a title of honour, usually hereditary, originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is an adaption from Sanskrit. During the Mughal rule, it was a title awarded to eminent people, while during British rule, the term was associated with zamindars and social leaders. The common female equivalent was Chowdhurani.

Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya is a senior Bangladesh Awami League politician who served as a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chandpur-2 constituency and a minister of several ministries. On 19 November 2021 he nominated for Bangladesh Awami League Presidium member. He received the Bir Bikram, the third highest award for gallantry, for his role in the Bangladesh Liberation War. Seven Murders of the Narayanganj was the enforced disappearance and murder of seven people in Bangladesh, including a Panel mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and a lawyer in April 2014. 27 Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members, including three top RAB 11 officials, were involved in the abduction and killing.

Ziaul Ahsan is a former Bangladesh Army officer. He is the former Director General of National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC). Prior to joining NTMC, he was a Director at National Security Intelligence. He previously served as the Additional Director General (ADG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

He is the former additional director general (operations) at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) an elite multi-service unit of the Bangladesh Police, and oversaw crackdowns on Islamist militants. He has been sanctioned by the United States for his activities in RAB. He had previously commanded RAB-5, RAB-7, and RAB-11.
