The Tasmanian Open [1] or Tasmanian Open Championships [2] was a men's and women's international tennis tournament founded in 1893 as the Tasmanian Lawn Tennis Championships. [3] or Tasmanian Championships It was first played Launceston Lawn Tennis Club, Launceston Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It remained part of the international tennis circuit until 1980.

History

In 1893 Tasmanian Lawn Tennis Championships were established Launceston Lawn Tennis Club, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. The men's tournament was played on grass courts except for the years 1940, 1941 when it was played on clay courts, and 1971–72, 1974, 1978 and 1980 when it was played on hard courts. The women's tournament was played exclusively on hard asphalt courts outdoors until 1935, then switched to clay courts until 1980. For the years 1940 '48 '51 '55 '60 '64 the tournament was valid as Australian Hard Court Championships. It was an annual featured event on the international tennis circuit till 1980.

In 1994 a new women's event was revived called the Tasmanian International Open, [4] held in Hobart, Australia. Since 2014 it has been known as the Hobart International and still played today.

Location

The championships alternated between Launceston and Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, but was not staged sequentially.

The Irish Open and originally known as the Irish Championships or Irish Lawn Tennis Championships, and for sponsorship reasons also known as Carroll's Irish Open Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament held at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, Ireland. Before the creation of the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the establishment of its world championship events in 1913, it was considered by players and historians one of the four most important tennis tournaments to win. the others being Wimbledon, the U.S. National championships and the Northern Championships. The men's event was part of the pre-open era tour from inception until 1967. It was then part of the open era non-aligned independent tour (1968–69). From 1970 to 1974, it was an event on the Grand Prix tennis circuit. The Tasmanian State Premiership was an Australian rules football tournament which was contested at the conclusion of the season, initially between the reigning Tasmanian Football League (TFL/TANFL) and Northern Tasmanian Football Association (NTFA) premiers, and then from 1950 also by the NWFU premiers, to determine an overall premier team for the state of Tasmania. The state premiership was contested 57 times between 1909 and 1978.

World Hard Court Championships were an annual major tennis tournament sanctioned by the International Lawn Tennis Federation, held from 1912 to 1923. The 1979 Australian Hard Court Championships, also known as the Tasmanian Open, was a men's tennis tournament that was played on the Grand Prix tennis circuit from 1 January until 7 January 1979. The event was held at the Doman Tennis Centre in Hobart, Australia and was played on outdoor hardcourts, this was the 35th edition. First-seeded Guillermo Vilas won the singles title and earned $8,000 first-prize money.

The Thunderbird Classic was a Virginia Slims Circuit affiliated tennis tournament founded in 1952, as a combined men's and women's tournament called the Phoenix Thunderbird Championships Invitational. Also known as the Phoenix Thunderbird Invitation it continued as a joint event until 1970 when it was branded as the Phoenix Thunderbird Open the men's event was discontinued that year.

The Australian Hard Court Championships was a former professional tennis tournament established in 1938 and held until 2008. The event was played on clay courts until 1977 when it switched to hard courts. The tournament was a combined event for men and women until the end of the 1980s. In 2009, Tennis Australia merged the separate men's and women's tournaments into a new combined tournament called the Brisbane International.

1876 Women's Tennis Season was mainly composed of national and local amateur tournaments. This year two tennis events were staged in Dublin, Ireland and Hamilton, Bermuda between April and December 1876.

The North of England Hard Court Championships and later known as the Wilson North of England Hard Court Tennis Championships for sponsorship reasons was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament established in 1913 and ran until 1988.

The ACT Open formally known as the Australian Capital Territory Open was a combined men's and women's hard court tennis tournament founded in 1929 as the ACT Championships or Australian Capital Territory Championships. The tournament was organised by the Canberra Lawn Tennis Association and first played at at the Manuka Tennis Courts, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia It ran annually until 1968 as part of the ILTF Circuit, then part of the ILTF Independent Tour until 1977 when it was downgraded.
