Under the old rules of freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, a ten-point differential ended the match.
Under the rules adopted in 2004–05 by United World Wrestling (then known as FILA), the international styles moved to a three-period system similar to a best of three series; the technical fall won only the period, as opposed to a pin, which ends the match entirely. However, if a wrestler won two out of three periods in this way, he was then the winner of the match by technical superiority. The international styles moved to a two-period system in 2006, with scoring continuing to accumulate throughout the match until its end. Accordingly, a technical fall was once again awarded once a specified point differential was reached.
As of 2019, UWW rules specify that a technical fall, officially termed "technical superiority", occurs once a wrestler leads by 10 points in freestyle or 8 points in Greco-Roman. [3]
A mercy rule, slaughter rule, knockout rule, or skunk rule ends a two-competitor sports competition earlier than the scheduled endpoint if one competitor has a very large and presumably insurmountable scoring lead over the other. It is called the mercy rule because it spares further humiliation for the loser. It is common in youth sports in North America, where running up the score is considered unsporting. It is especially common in baseball and softball in which there is no game clock and a dominant team could in theory continue an inning endlessly.

Collegiate wrestling is the form of wrestling practiced mainly by men at the college and university level in the United States. This style, with some slight modifications, is also practiced at high school and middle school levels, and also among younger participants, where it is known as scholastic wrestling. Greco-Roman (US), Graeco-Roman (UK), classic wrestling (Europe) or French wrestling is a style of wrestling that is practised worldwide. It was contested at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and has been included in every edition of the summer Olympics held since 1904. This style of wrestling forbids holds below the waist, which is the main feature that differentiates it from freestyle wrestling. This restriction results in an emphasis on throws, because a wrestler cannot use trips to bring an opponent to the ground or hook/grab the opponent's leg to avoid being thrown.
Amateur wrestling is a variant of wrestling practiced in collegiate, school or other amateur level competitions. There are two international wrestling styles performed in the Olympic Games: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Both styles are under the supervision of United World Wrestling. A similar style, commonly called collegiate, is practiced in colleges and universities, secondary schools, middle schools, and among younger age groups in the United States. Where the style is not specified, this article refers to the international styles of competition on a mat. In February 2013, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to remove the sport from the 2020 Summer Olympics onwards. On 8 September 2013, the IOC announced that wrestling would return to the Summer Olympics in 2020. The rapid rise in the popularity of the combat sport mixed martial arts (MMA) has increased interest in amateur wrestling due to its effectiveness in the sport and it is considered a core discipline.

Real Pro Wrestling was a professional sports league of wrestling, similar to the amateur wrestling found in the Olympic Games and at the college and high school level. The term "real" was meant to emphasize that it was professional and it was wrestling, but that it was not professional wrestling in the traditional sense; modern professional wrestling features predetermined outcomes and operates under a very different set of rules from amateur wrestling.
Scholastic wrestling, sometimes known in the United States as folkstyle wrestling, is a style of amateur wrestling practiced at the high school and middle school levels in the United States. This wrestling style is essentially collegiate wrestling with some slight modifications. It is practiced in 49 of the 50 states in the United States. When practiced by wrestling clubs of younger participants, scholastic wrestling is better known as "folkstyle".

USA Wrestling is also the official representative to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and to United World Wrestling (UWW) and is considered the national governing body of the sport at the amateur level. Spencer Richard Lee (born October 14, 1998) is an American freestyle and folkstyle wrestler. In freestyle, he was the 2019 US National champion and a three-time World Champion, once as a cadet and twice as a junior. As a folkstyle wrestler, Lee is a two-time NCAA Division I Champion and Dan Hodge Trophy winner out of the University of Iowa and a three-time PIAA champion as a high schooler. As of February 9, 2021, Lee is the top-ranked 125-pound NCAA wrestler in the country as per The Open Mat.

Bo Dean Nickal is an American freestyle wrestler and former folkstyle wrestler. In freestyle, he won last year's U23 World Championship and US Open championship. As a folkstyle wrestler, he was a three-time NCAA Division I Champion and three-time Big Ten Champion. In 2019, he earned the Dan Hodge Trophy award and the Schalles Award, also winning the latter one in 2018.
